changing of gen 1 crank to gen 2

Before e-bay, whenever we had a crank fail mag, the customer just had us throw them away. Now......They want them back as they have a place to get rid of them.

As for the 08 cranks, be sure to leave the counterbalancer in as they are a lot more out of balance then the gen 1s were.

Confidence inspiring as all get out.... if/when I decide to "stroke" the motor, I will spend the few extra bucks and get a warranted part... Thanks for the heads up...

my brother is getting his done plus someother things.
By the time he's done he will for the most part have an 08 motor in a 00' busa.
i will let you know how it turns out when it is done.

It seems like a lot of trouble to go through for 30 more cc's.
41cc's... and you are correct....it is a bit of trouble.

But isn't most things!
It'll be the next thing I do to mine

Almost did it this winter but the Mrs. is already freakin about my other upgrades this winter.

I should be starting mine up this week! I can't wait to put a few miles on it and set it up on the dyno.

dun noe abt trouble but giving that extra 41cc with 1 extra CR could make the bike much nicer to ride esp u have a aftermarket system.

i am having hmf full low dual. the ride is nice already, looking to make it better.

most prob will be doing the 08 crank and yoshi cam. i think after that it shld be quite enuff for me.

I started it last night. I need to tidy up the cables, hoses, and wiring. I also need to go over everything to make sure I didn't miss anything. Then I can put a few miles on it to start breaking it in/checking it out.

The crank is Suzuki part number 12000-15810
You will need bearings to match your combination of cases, rods, and crankshaft you receive. You will also need to do something to get the deck height right to make up for the difference in stroke. I used two oem gaskets, one on each side of a custom made aluminum spacer from Cometic. If you have a 99-05 the cam change crank gear and starter drive will have to be changed for the 06-07 versions or modified to fit. (I'm not 100% sure on the 05 models)

The installation procedure is in both the 08 service manual and the 99-07 manuals. However the dimensions have changed for the main bearing, case bore, bearing shell thickness, and clearance. You need to use the 08 specs, but the case dimensions on the 99-07 are not the same. You have to measure and figure clearances.

Deck height is a variable that differs on each bike. Different builders do things a bit different. I knew what target deck height I was after and had a very knowledgeable person giving me advice. That is the reason for the base gasket combo I used.

Changing the deck height changes the cam timing as well so a set of cam gears is needed.

The new cranks have been reported as being more out of balance than the older ones. I had mine balanced and my machinist was surprised how far it was out.

APE has kits available that has a spacer and the crank has been balanced. I know he ships internationally.

The bike will be a 1340 and with a 1397 it would be a 1441, My buddie just did one in his 07 and it picked up 7 hp, and this was a good tuner. the tq was a little higher,he is a heaiver guy so he just wanted the tq. now In the real world (drag strip) it was only good for well I rather not say, but it was not good.I hope this helps,Im not being negitive just telling u what realy will happen if u do this mod.The reason it works well with a 08 is it a whole differnt fuel system,or just more efficent!

hi SIR!

thanks is very informative.
thus am i right to say that i need to get from APE or have 08 crank to get it balanced?

why dun u get a 2mm straight for the gasket? instead of 2 oem and 1 cometic?

so mine 06 do not need any change in (cam change crank gear and starter drive)?

u mention abt using 08 specs, does it mean for case bore and clearance?? << i am lost here.

how does the deck height affect ?
the cam gear if using a yoshi cam/web with spocket would i need that ?

the spacer is equal to gasket?

hi,

care to share what is the not good?

I feel it should be balanced. The guy that did mine agrees. I've seen Jay post they are off further than the 99-07 versions. APE sell you one that has been balanced

With a 2mm stroked crank it adds 1mm at the top of the stroke and 1mm at the bottom of the stroke. The bottom of the stroke is swinging in the cases so we only have to worry about not hitting something there. The top of the stroke moves the piston 1mm higher. This is what we have to correct for. Suzuki did it with a smaller wrist pin moved up in the piston. We chose to move the block up by spacing it.

I chose two gaskets which are coated with a sealer and a bare aluminum spacer. This combination allowed me to set my deck height to what I wanted without milling a few thousandths off of the top of the block. Using bases gaskets with sealer kept me from having to mess with liquid or gell sealers during the installation process of having to get the rings compressed and in place.

Many methods would work but it that is what I chose. Regardless a 2mm spacer will not work.

Correct.

Three things have to be measured and calculated to set the clearance.
1) main bearing case bore diameter
2) main bearing crank pin diameter
3) main bearing shell thickness.
The service manual does a pretty good job of explaining it on pages 3-73 to 3-79 in the Gen I manual. To be frank, if you do not understand it clearly from there, you need to have an engine builder assemble it. One small error can ruin a lot of high dollar parts.

If you raise the block up 1mm, the camshaft timing chain rotates both camshafts slightly. You have to use adjustable cam gears to correct this.

I don't understand what you are asking here. The spacer dimensions are the same as the base gasket with the exception of the thickness. They also differ in material.

Hi Sir,

thanks alot for the clarification.

with this i can check with my mechanic if he can do it anot.

as i am located in Singapore. not much builders are around capable of doing these.

thanks alot!!!
