Coal Miners trapped in WV

Very sad story...

What's even worse is that they survived the initial blast, did what they were supposed to do by building a barricade and waiting for rescue, and then more than likely died from CO inhalation, hypothermia, and dehydration. The sole survivor was very lucky to be suffering from hypothermia since that slows the bodily function way down, short, shallow breathing, extremely low heart rate.

Were I him, I would only share the story of how they all initially survived and then succumbed with the families, and NOT the press. The press nor we need to hear about how these guys did the right thing, hoped and prayed for rescue while huddling together trying to share body heat only to die off, probably 1 by 1. Who really wants to hear such a story?

Very sad, even harder for the families having the positive news, then the carpet being pulled from under them.

27 year old sole survivor suffering from partailly collapsed lung, but no hypothermia or significant levels of CO in his blood stream. I thought that I heard a news report say that 1 person was found at the site of the blast, away from the others. Maybe this guy? Maybe he got frustrated and tried digging himself out? Maybe that is what saved him?

What a shame, sorry to hear the news this morning when I logged onto the Times. Prayers to family and friends are sent...

I heard on FOX that a Supervisor was listening at the Command Center and heard the Rescue team say they had one body and though they had located the other 12. So, what does he do, he calls his brother-in-law on his cell phone and tells him that the other 12 have been found. Then the brother-in-law misunderstands this as meaning all 12 were alive.
Just another reason to NOT say anything until YOU know the people WHO know say anything.

I can't imagine the toll that the wrong info put on those families. To go from worry to joy, to utter devastation in a matter of hours boggles the mind.

Yup.

As far as the paper, the Miami Herald also say only 1 passed on. Turns out as soon as it was announced they were alive, the papers jumped at the chance to get this story on the front page and get it out to the public before anyone else.

3 hours later, the truth was revealed.

I really feel bad for the families. Literally, the higher you are, the harder the impact when you fall. Had they been given the facts first, it would hurt. But that pain can't possibly compare to the feeling of believing your love one is alive, you celebrate for 3 hours, and then being told that person is actually dead.

My goodness ...
