Don't be embarassed--I work in the field (dental lab tech), and I don't like sitting in thei chair either. Also, beware of a root canal and crown done at the same time. This will either be a crappy job, or very expensive. I recommend going to an endodontist to get the root canal done. They are specialists for root canals. Want to avoid pain/possible after effects (pain, infection, nerve damage, etc)--go to an endo doc! Afterwards, ask for their recommendation for getting the crown completed. FWIW, a prosthodontist is a crown/bridge specialist, but they are not always necessary for a single crown.
Also, if money is tight and the access is small, they can simply fill with amalgam (silver stuff), and not need to spend on a crown.
