Deer

Hal, you really bought it with your deer, didn't you...
I live off the road that holds the record in Missouri for the most deer hit, per mile, than any other road in the State...
With that said, I can only say to keep the high beam on at night and watch for the eyes to shine, and when you see them, SLOW DOWN. When you see one, there is usually another one, or more, right behind that one.
I almost always have to slow down, or stop, when I come home late at night, because they like to sleep along side of the drive, and will run up it, to follow me around the house to the garage.
Do you think that is because I feed them, and they come to me when I call them?

I usually slow the pace down, a lot, in the fall, especially during and around the "rut season".
This is the time the bucks are chasing the does, and they must have blinders on to everything else.
Good luck to everyone in this thread. I don't think there is any one thing that will guarantee you won't hit one, but some things work a little.
Going a "little" slower helps.

They really are that tame, Here's another of them. I'm out in the yard and they don't even get up sometimes. The little buck would let me come up and sit down right next to him without getting up.

I was riding one time with my wife on the back down a 2 lane highway. Just comming out of a sweeper I see 3 of them standing right next to the road. While I'm doing everything I can to stop, I hear my wife say "AWWW, LOOK AT THE PRETTY DEER". Meanwhile I'm $h!t'n in my pants !!! From what I hear they're not too smart, LOL.

Not sure if deer whistles work, but I have them on my bike and I've encountered deer many times and they run away from me while I was approaching them. Sometimes I'd like to think that they actually work.

The rutting season in Texas is crazy in November. I won't even ride at night. They make an electronic deer whistle too. The only problem w/ the small cheap ones is you must be moving above a certain speed for the wind to generate the whistle.

It would be hard to do on a bike but you can stop a deer in its tracks if you "mick" him.

In a loud falsetto voice just say mick, mick. It will stop in its tracks & look to see where the sound came from. Be ready to take your shot.

It works every time. I do it just for fun & also to entertain my company when the deer come through the yard.

Maybe its just the TN deer that do it. Never tried it on the little dog deer in FL.

Deer are really bad in CT this year. They are travling in larger herds. I went past 12 together the other day. If one bolts the all go, so the only thing you can do is slow down until they are gone. I have never seen so many together.

Two mornings ago on my commute in I was coming around a nice high-speed sweeper that turns left then right. I make the left and start to adjust for the right when I spot Bambi and her husband debating whether to go over the concrete wall dividing the highway or not.

I have HIDs and I hit the airhorn for all I was worth while scrubbing speed as quickly as I could in the turn. Fortunately they decided to go over the wall and into oncoming traffic. Somehow they made it across safely.

My stomach was doing flipflops the rest of the ride in. Maybe I need to get a deer whistle. Interesting mod.

i was riding behind a car in tx and saw a deer run out into the road, and smack dab into the side of the car in front of me... that was interesting to see

I am no fan of deer.. Back in 1992 on my then new V Max I had three deer run out into the road in front of me. It was 3:00am and I always thought I would see their eyes reflect the light to give me warning. Wrong!!!! When you pop over a rise in the road at 65mph or so and they are running from you their asses dont reflect until you are real close! End result was me with the calf of my right leg cut in half... It took six months for my leg to heal all the way... I don't ride at night much anymore and then if Im caught out late I ride slow.
