Disaster strikes on a quiet ride

My wife and I both had the day off today so we had the neighbor girl babysit and took the bikes out. It was so beautiful out today: 60's and 70's...just gorgeous. We decided to run in to Wautoma this morning, grab some breakfast and head out to Mautston and ride along the Wisconsin river. We took some back roads to Wautoma and there's a particular section of Czech Rd that get really twistie, like hair pin turns. We come up to one of those turns and I'm in the lead, my wife had backed off some and I'm lucky that I was sensible in this turn...lucky my wife was with me. My wife is a very conservative rider and I tend to get a bit more agressive when I'm by myself or with a couple of my friends. So, I took this turn pretty slow and was looking through the turn and BAM! there's a car in my lane coming from the opposite direction. I stood the boo up a bit and drifted to the shoulder, but I knew my wife was toast. She hasn't been riding for very long and I knew that if the lady was already in my lane, she was going to smack Lori. So I'm trying to look over my shoulder and can't see sh!t and I stand up in the saddle and turn, to see that this woman was completely senseless and was ALL the way over into the other lane and turning, almost on the opposite shoulder...Lori just ran her bike straight...she didn't even get to turn into the curve. I wish we would have had our camera with us. You can see her tire marks going straight into the turn and then straight into the shoulder. She tipped it in the dirt and gravel, clutch side. The frame slider sunk into the dirt and the fairing slid a bit in the gravel and dirt. She's got road rash on her hip and is bruised to hell. I'm glad she was wearing her armored jacket. The left shoulder of her jacket is torn up a bit, but her shoulder is good. The worst thing? That fuc*** lady didn't even stop. She just kept going. I flipped around and Lori was walking it off. I stood her SV up and...man, her poor little bike is toast. We'll have to replace that clutch side fairing. It's cracked a bit and scratched all to hell. Poor Lori is so upset. We washed and polished the bikes yesterday...poor girl. She's okay, though. A bit of hurt pride mixed with anger that some a-hole caused an accident that screwed up her bike. I can't beleive the woman didn't even stop. She's either a complete a** or just absolutely clueless...maybe both.

I definately think the punishment needs to be stepped WAY up for hit and run. You hit and run, you goto jail and NEVER drive again!!!

glad to hear your're ok

it's for those kind of situation that I don't want my wife to ride.

I know she would be a good rider but I would never forgive myself if something whould happen to her while we are riding.

Jason, I just sent you a PM and I hadn't read this post. I am glad to hear that Lori is okay. Better the bike be toast than her. Some of the cagers out there are just completely clueless when they are driving - I'm sorry this happened, but at least you were together.

Glad your both Ok, I would have chased that woman down and stopped her, called the police to file a report. Hopefully she would have at least got a ticket and if the LE found it to be her fault her insurance can pay for the damages...Some people. Or was she too far gone by the time you finished tending to Lori.

Thanks Charles. Yeah, I'm glad it was just the bike. Lori's a little sore, but she's okay. I took the clutch side fairing off a little bit ago and washed it up to get all the sh!it off and gets the scratches washed out. I put some polish on it. It'll hold up for now until we get her a new piece.

Thanks Shawn. Yeah, Lori's going to be fine. She's pretty sore, but she's a tough girl. She's says I'm insensitive because when I saw the road rash I told her if there's no blood it doesn't count.

Nahm, She's really bummed about her bike. She was on her way to class earlier and called on her cell to talk about it. I got the fairing off and washed it all up good, then put some polish and wax on it. It doesn't look nearly as bad now. It'll hold up fine until we get her a new piece. I'll tell Lori you say, "Hi."

Yeah, I pro'lly could have caught up to the lady, but all I would have done was pull her out of her car and beat the crap out of her.

Oh, she got back on her bike and we went to lunch, then headed home. She was fairly sore during the riding, but she said if she didn't get back on right then she might decide not to all. She said she was a bit more nervous when we came to sweeping curves and turns, but she held up okay. She's a toughy, my little wife.
