Mechanic wanted to slap me around the shop for awhile. he said do you realize how close you came to having a ride to the hospital or morgue?
Take at look at the old aluminum rear sprocket made by Vortex versus the new sprocket on the bottom. He stated that those teeth were as close to breaking off as you can get. Then they can lodge in the front sprocket and cause the counter shaft to jam. Loss of control and down you go. With the Hayabusa's grunt I shudder how close I came to having some serious problem out on the road.
i haven't been oiling the chain every 500 miles as required. With the new BST c/f wheels I literally ate the rear sprocket in one tire life. Man he was angry with me.
he threw a can of chain wax at me...nice to get abused while you are coughing up 100 bucks an hour.

That is why I've never bothered with alloy sprockets. When I did my -1/+2 conversion, I bought OEM JT stainless steel sprockets from the Suzuki stealership.

That'll learn ya.
Looks like its steel time for you, whatever weight ya gain over the aluminum is well compensated for with those BST's.

I think I wax my chain too much with Maxima racing wax, even every time it rains.

Is there such thing as waxing your chain too much?

Good to know about aluminum sprockets, it makes sense too, aluminum is not as strong as steel.
When its time for me to get new sprockets, i am going with the steel:thumbsup:better safe than sorry.

Can you believe it? I can't find a steel sprocket that matches up with the BST sprocket holder. I will be on the phone early next week with S Africa trying to find out about steel sprockets...right now I am stuck with 'em??????

No disrespect meant but that is just a total lack of maintenance or knowledge whichever. I mean come on, Stevie Wonder could've seen that sprocket was shot a couple thousand miles ago. ??? 2hip just saying if you don't know much on bike maintenance then you should really look into some kind of maintenance plan with your local dealer where they could go over your bike and make sure everything is up to par. If something so obvious can get overlooked then imagined how something much smaller but far more serious can slip by?

I very much prefer steel sprockets over aluminum, but to call steel stronger than aluminum is inaccurate. It all depends on tensile strength..:rulez:

Tensile strength has nothing to do with the wear charicteristics. If you are talking about a hardened aluminum versus an annealed steel than MAYBE it could be a very slight amount stronger as far as hardness goes but tensile strength? I don't think so. I have worked with just about every aluminum and steel alloy out there and I'm really confused at where you got this information.

I think your mechanic may have been over reacting a bit just to get your attention. I've run Vortex sprockets much farther than that without a problem. When the points are so sharp you can shave with them, they are done.

I'm curious how many miles you have on that sprocket? I have used Vortex sprockets almost exclussively over the past few years and the best mileage ever was 13K miles on an 04 GSXR1K. I ran it until the teeth began to break just to see how many miles were available in a pinch. When I changed it there were 4 broken teeth.

I usually change them around 8K miles and they are looking pretty sad by then. That's 8K hard miles. I'm curious as to how long a vortex aluminum sprocket will last under normal conditions? :dunno:

Yelling and throwing things at you,.............well? In this circumstance,....I'd call that TOUGH LOVE!!! Do better maintanance,......or get use to it!

If it makes you feel any better, I have Performance Machine wheels and sprocket with a 1397 engine. Choices of sprockets are slim and my PM rear sprocket is wearing out in heartbeats verses miles. That is the price you pay for aftermarket wheels I guess. Having fun and motorcycles cost money. I have just been living with the cost.

If you really want to save your new aluminum sprocket...GET RID OF CHAIN WAX! The stuff is ****ttt! Use a silicone spray. It will reduce friction. Wax collects dirt, it's total junk.

Haha. Being married I wax my chain all the time.
