Extra Key?

Just wondering how many of you keep an extra key on your bike?

I haven't lost mine yet but there is a first time for everything - and losing your key would put a big dent in your day if you didn't have a spare.

If you do have an extra where do you keep it?

In a drawer at home. I'd never keep a spare on a bike. Not many hiding places and the thieves know where all of them are.

I have extras but I don't keep any on my bike. My keys don't ever my person unless they are in the ignition or my house.

I ALWAYS have an extra key one me when I ride......just in case :) And a 3rd one is stored at home with the rest of other spare keys.

I ALWAYS put an extra one in my wallet every time I leave the house, years ago I accidentally locked my key in the trunk(don't ask me how 'cause I don't remember:laugh:)and had to call a locksmith(was in a parking lot quite a ways from home).Had to sit there over an hour and shell out a $100 for that brain fart.

I have all the spare keys for all my vehicles in an envelope together with the vehicle titles. They are safely locked away in my study.

Always on me, and here is why.

Scenario 1: accidentally dropped into a storm drain or similar inaccessible place. Without the spare, you are stuck.

Scenario 2: A would be assailant is trying to take the bike away from you. One option is... well, let's not go there.... Another option is to throw the keys away, and let the bad guy go and look for it. In the meantime, get the spare key out and ride away.

It's nice to have options...

BTW, when I drive, I also carry a spare for the car - for similar reasons. Additionally, with the car, it's quite possible to accidentally lock the doors with the keys inside. It happened to me only once some years ago, but boy was I glad I simply opened the door with my spare, and the whole thing was a non-event.

When I take a long trip, I bring my spare but don't leave it on the bike ever. I will sometimes bring my spare but keep it on my person. Depends on if it's an in-town ride or if I'm going to be a couple hours out or more. I keep both sets of keys in the same place at home so I can make the decision on the fly.

Thanks for the replies.

I guess the reason I was asking is, if I lost a key while I was out riding or away from home.
This should be an unlikely event but if I rode to an amusement park (or any place that had rollercoasters etc) and
the key fell out of my pocket, that would be one reason to have a spare, no?
Yes it would be a rare event that you (or me) would lose a key, but usually, success is directly proportional to preparedness.

ONE time I was at a lake and had swim trunks on and had forgot that I put my car keys in one of the pockets.
Then I proceeded to go jet skiing and when I returned I didn't have any keys. :banghead: Again rare as it only happened once.
Yes- sometimes I do learn from my mistakes.

Maybe the best MOD for this case would/could be a thumb a print reader to turn on the ignition and eliminate the keys altogether,
other then the trunk/rear seat - but that wouldn't keep you from riding home if you lost that key.
Nothing to carry other then your thumb. :beerchug: Something to think about? ??? Pretty common on newer smart phones, no?
