Okay - here's what happened. A couple of days ago my 2 and 3/4 year old son was playing out in the carport and I watched him accidentally slam into my Blusa with his little trike. I checked it and saw a few scraches, but nothing attrocious. Well, I rode about 250 miles yesterday and this morning I was showing my wife how I was going to to the screen mod, starting today, when I noticed a 3 in split in the fairing going in to the small hole towards the back of the fairing (the little screen hole) so, here'e where I need help:
How can I fix this? I want to take the fairings off to do the screen mod and since they will be off, I want to get the fix done at the same time. Can I use JB Weld on the inside? What about the Goop AC stuff some people are using to attach thier screens? This crack runs parallel to the pipes so I am a little worried about heat.

As for the opinion:
Until I get the work done, I was thinking about taking off the fairings and going semi naked. Has anyone ever run the bike without the fairings? If so, did you do anything special to protect the bike?

Anyway, what do you all think?
Thanks.

Don't know about fixing the damage...But I wouldn't ride alot half naked...The side fairings are designed to support the upper fairing and it will bounce alot if their not attached and that could possibly screw up the fairing alignment...

No idea with fixing the fairing... but would not advice a naked busa ride

It probably could be fixed, but I don't know what it would take. I would also advise against runnin' the Busa naked.

You can use JB weld on the inside of the fairing. I put my screens on with that. BUT, this is totally not gonna fix the look of the crack on the outside. But you are in a bad position here. I don't know much about bodywork but as far as I know there isn't much you can do about repairing plastic once it's split. You may only have the option of a new fairing if u want the original look not sure though. But like everyone said unless u are cruising slow speeds I wouldn't advise a naked busa. Good luck man I know that has to suck for ya

MC, the goop that I used on the screen,s seem strong enough to hold, and maybe you could put a decal of some sort on to cover up the split til you get a more perm. fix. Just a thought.

The fairing can be repaired, you should take it to a professional and have it done right. They can weld the plastic back together and it will have to be repainted, probably air brushed in the repair area and reclear the entire panel. Its unfortunate that this happened but I would repair it the right way. This type of plastic repair is fairly common with very good results.

I would be careful about riding without fairings, there are alot of hoses, wiring, and other panels that won't have any support and could be damaged if not properly secured.

I rode mine naked for about 50 miles one day.. No problems reported. I did notice it was running alittle hotter than normal though.

Well, here's what I am going to do:
I pulled the tail and two lowers off tonight, so this week, while it is supposed to be raining, I am going to install my Muzzy fan and try to find someone to fix my fairing. I'll do the screens in my tail and see how they come out, then do the lowers when I have good ones to work with.....
I just need to find someone who can do plastic welds. Anybody know someone in the Fl. Panhandle?

? By the way, here is a pic of the crack.

I would use a soldering gun with a flat tip and apply a good bit of pressure on the tip until I melted or fused the plastic together while creating a groove the widthe of the tip and approximately 1/8" deep and then fill it in with fiberglass and mesh reinforcement then sand it down nice and smooth like, doing all of this of course from the backside. This would prevent further cracking and allow you to shop around for another fairing or a shop repair. this quick fix will not cause problem for a future shop repair which will consist of either a.) Bondo repair job or b.) heat fused such as done on thermoplatic both requiring a repaint job so you'd probably be ahead by buying new plastic. just my $.01, good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the instructions. I just found out that there are at least two people in the local area who do plastic welding....I may not do anything until I get in touch with them.

Ive ran quite abit without my fairings, it doesn't hurt a thing. Just don't forget to take those 2 foam pieces out from between the hoses or they will be gone.

I remember when I used to put around Futenma/58 on the GSXR 400s that they used to overheat...that why you run without fairings?

I really miss that place, I was planning on retiring there. Eat some Genghis Khan for me will ya?

*UPDATE*
A local guy hooked me up with his plastic welding kit (looks a lot like a glue gun or a flattened soldering iron) and fixed the crack on the inside with ABS plastic..we'll see how that holds up...I am thinking about layering over his repair with JB Weld....
So, while I had the lowers off, I figured why not install my Muzzy Aluminum fan? And while I am at it, I'll do my fairing screens as well. So long story longer:
tonight I swapped out the fan and did the tail screens. It is supposed to rain this week, so I am not really in a hurry, but I started to get pretty excited when I put the tail back on with the seat and hump.....I am really glad that I did this. I'll post pics as soon as I am done (Bessie don't like it when people look at her while she's undressed - you all understand.)

Yeeeeeooooowwwza!

There is also a plasic weld. I think JB weld makes it. I used it on my daughters pocket bike, and it came out pretty good. I got the plastic weld at the hardware store.

Naw, I just seem to work on my Busa more than I ride it! So I end up riding with the fairing off sometimes. When all the way to Hedo once with them off. As far as overheating, I run EngineIce, and the temp gauge never gets to the halfway mark anymore. Even in the 90s.

As far as Okinawa, man it is an AWESOME assignment! I do not want to leave, and I too will miss it greatly someday just like you do now. I want to go ride some of the twistiest (is that a word) in the USA to compare it to 70 over here. I bet there are very similar.

I got the Genghis Khan covered for ya. When were you here?

I did a short stop in 92, tour in 93, and was accompanied from 98-02, all at Futenma - but I lived on Kadena. I went to mainland Japan (Atsugi) on 02 and left in 03 when my son was diagnosed with type I diabetes..... both my wife and I loved it!

People used to look at me and wonder how I would get the Blusa through the japanese traffic. I just pulled the mirrors in and ran it.

Hey I just hijacked my own thread
