Following Loads

So, I hear on the morning news that yesterday, a motorcyclist traveling on CA125 was hit by a mattress which was unloading itself from the back of a pick-up truck.

He crashed.

A Good Samaratin (he didn't look Samarian on TV, but ) stopped and diverted oncoming traffic around the crash so the cyclist didn't get run over (kudos to you, sir). The pick-up truck did not pull over.

Anyway, I'm sure I don't need to say it, but...

IF YOU DON'T NEED TO FOLLOW A LOADED VEHICLE, DON'T.

There are no pix available right now, nor links to this story on the news channel's website.

I had a couch come flying at me one time. I never follow a load of any sort! good advice Scar.

Sad thread to read about a fellow rider. Hope the driver of the truck has his Karma bomb blow up soon!

Had to sad that this is funny as hell, i dont care who you are, thats funny right there!

Some people don't know what rope is for I guess. If I'm behind someone with a load that isn't tied down I back Waaaay off or pass very quickly. We have a lot of that here in the backwoods of georgia.

A buddy and I were riding home one day, heading south on I-35 (3 lanes). A pickup hauling an open trailer was in the left lane. Laying on the open trailer were thin sheets of glass; they were not secured in any way, just laying flat. I saw them starting to "float" so I motioned to my buddy and we moved to the far-right lane. As we were pulling ahead of the truck, one of the glass sheets was picked up, sailed probably about 20 ft into the air and then came tumbling down and shattered in the lane next to us...fortunately, we had just pulled ahead and we missed it! The guy kept on driving...

if i had a choice to crash into something

a matress would be at the top of my list

prefrabbly a memory foam if i could pick

Crazy.......kinda ironic, when I teach MSF I always use the example of a mattress falling from a truck as an example so the students can get a visual of the importance of mastering the technique, "swerving".

In my years of riding I have seen many mattresses in the road or close to the edge.....always wondered what it would be like to encounter one on my bike.......

As I walk around with a limp for a week, I can say I have a newfound respect for what normally feels "soft" to the touch (like a deer butt). I don't want to run into even a load of pillows! Avoidance through awareness and skill is the answer. (skill defined as avoidance practice/ braking practice/constant focus in certain conditions, etc/).
Good post Scar. Doyle

I had to dodge a piece of plywood one time...that sucker was ejected from a truck and came at me like a guided missile. Not fun :alcoholic:4:alcoholic:4:alcoholic:4

A pallet of bricks ..made life very interesting for 2 seconds .. then even if you stop short of the incursion ... its, what is coming up behind you that is now a major pucker factor......

I had a lazy boy blow out in front of me and it just exploded when it hit the driver passed us going at least 85 and an ac unit cover a nother time. I actually ducked that one. But I dont know what the deal is with matteresses is people dont realize that plywood or a matteres becomes a wing at speed. There was a man killed here in San Antonio, rideing in the back of one of those minie trucks trying to hold down a matteres on 1604 one of the bussiest and fastest moveing roads in S A. He took a magic carpet ride in rush hour traffic. Sounds urban legend , but I saw the news my self.

Dang, some of those stories are crazy!! I know exactly what y'all are talking about...not too fun having to dodge all the crap out there...here in Ms I think I have to dodge as much road kill as I do crap from people hauling too....Just yesterday on the way to work I was behind (safely thank goodness) a plumbers truck and watche about four of his pvc pipes come out of the truck and skid across the lanes.....then on the way home I got passed by some idiot pulling an SUV at about 80 or 85 with a tow truck..scary part was he didn't get the truck secured on the tow straight, so as he was pulling it down the road the SUV was crooked----looked like at any time the thing was gonna come off the truck... I just backed waaaayy off and hoped he didn't lose it

Interestingly enough...on my own way to work this morning, I was able to divert Wasabi from contact with a 3' section of 4x4 lumber. The car behind me hit it. Last thing I saw was that piece of wood spinning in the air.

Scarey.

Be safe, ya'llz. It's a crap-shoot out there...every time you turn that key...

last year some time i remember avoiding some plywood blowing around on the freeway. was a storm coming in real windy and it could of came from any where but it came out of the ditch in front of me followed by a big sheet of styrofoam insulation

Semi-truck recaps are a real danger during the hot summer months here in the Detroit area. I've seen them fly off many times and at any given time I-94 from Detroit to Ann Arbor can be littered with hundreds if not thousands of pieces of their tires. But the scariest incident I ever had was a little over 30 years ago on I-75 coming back from up north between Saginaw and Flint on my '73 Kaw H2 750 and saw a whole tire and wheel come off a semi in front of me. Watched it bounce twice then land no more than 10 feet to the right of me. Looked in my mirror and saw cars spinning and sliding all over the freeway and median. Too close for my taste.
