Frame

I have been doing billit for quite sometime now,but I have to admit the coating on the Busa frame is almost bullet proof,I have tried the airplane stripper, but no help.I am getting ready to polish my frame 7 extended swing arm.Does anyone know of something to put on the frame to break the coating down so I don't have to sand for days. The frame looks pretty smooth under the clear so once the clear is off it would be a matter of general sanding , plus finish sanding.Thank you

What is the coating made of, It would be nice to recoat after polishing so that you don't have to spend a lifetime cleaning the starts of corrosion.

Any suggestions?

I have polished more bikes than i care to remember.Easy off oven cleaner is very messy but it works.Mkae sure you cover everything when you use this stuff.Spray it on and wait, the aluminum coating will start to turn black. It doesnt remove the coating but it does make it easier to sand off.I have use Nyalic to clear coating small parts that I have polished. This stuff works but it is thin and runs very easily that is why I have never used it on large parts like frames and swing arms.Eastwood sells it in a spray or it can be brushed on.Nyalic will not chip, yellow, peel or crack. It is heat resistant to 500 degrees.Nyalic was made for NASA during the 60s for the Apollo program. They also have their own website.

Frank have you found anything to treat or coat the aluminum to retard corrosion?

How do you maintain the polished finish and how often do they require care?

Thanks for the tip, you have to be careful if you coat the frame with aftermarket clear, they must be U V resistant.Even the coatings I have used in the past always turn yellow.I found the best solution on the parts I make is to finish to a high luster, then once a year use mothers or some other good metal polish to go over it lightly. It comes back to the original luster with very little effort.

Gixxer1300, thank you! You have to love this site, somebody usually has an answer or at least a clue.

Do you know any commercial firms that do shoot large parts(frames). I have seen some nice coatings on pipes and other parts from Airborne Coatings and SemTec here in Ct. Lots of aerospace industry here.

In the town where I live in there is a small powder coating operation.I was asking around today, & was told they have a clear powder coating that is U V proof.I am going to call them Monday to find out if it is true, if so I will let you know what I find out..

You are welcome. There is a company about 1/2 mile from my home. They coat top fuel dragster frames but I dont know what coating there are using.

Gixxer what method did you use to remove the rough casting part on the frame..possibly a orbital sander...what grit sand paper. Will a large buffing pad on something like large car buffer work on the frame...I`ve polished small parts but not a frame...how about the swing arm...all help is appreciated...Thanks!!

be very careful with that oven cleaner!

think of it as acid.

and don't let it get on anything other your frame. tape the rest off.

also, i'd use a green scratch pad and dish gloves. this stuff will eat you hands up!

There are 2 ways of removing rough casting and the Anodized coating on Aluminum. The first way is to use a Random Orbital sander.I start out with 220 grit sand paper. The second way is to use a Straight shaft grinder with a spiral sewn buffing wheel or a bench grinder with a buffing wheel along with 80 grit polishing compound.I like using 3/4 horsepower bench grinders the best. What ever you use,it will have to have an rpm between 3000 and 7000 rpm.above 7000 rpm will melt the aluminum.
