Cobb and cherokee counties are nice. Gwinett is good if you are Hispanic, Asian or don't care. Atlanta has some really nice areas but you are gonna pay for it. Depending on the neighborhood and how close to atl you could pay 100k to 500k for basically the same house.
I live in Cobb county and I like it, suburban life for me. I get enough of the city during work. Shop for a good neighborhood. Stay away from the areas with trailer parks in any county in the metro area as they have a bit more crime in those areas. outside of the metro area TP's are ok.
The school system here in Ga is in the bottom %25 of the nation so send em to private school if you can afford it. hope that is a good starter for you.
