On behalf of Muzzys I’d like to set the record straight on all the various ZX-12 commentary I’ve been reading. The ZX-12 that we took to Atlanta was the second one we have received. The first, a red pre-production prototype and the one we brought to Gainesville, was loaned to us by Kawasaki to do early fit checks and pipe development. That bike is now in pieces, being used to prototype many of the parts you will see from us in the coming months. The green one that Rickey had at Gainsville was also a pre pro and had been given to Rickey just to ride and give feedback. That bike was returned to Kawasaki right after Gainesville and, last time I saw it, it was in pieces. The bike that Rickey Gadson rode last weekend at Atlanta was a true production bike which we purchased through normal channels and received on Tuesday, March 21. We spent one day doing exhaust fit checks (so that we could begin manufacturing our pipes) and then moved the bike to our race shop. We broke in the bike for a few hours on the dyno, installed a production pipe and messed with a few external things (there really wasn’t much we could do). We have no way, currently, of tweaking the fuel injection, but are supplying a pipe to DynoJet for a PC map. We installed the lowering links and a fork lowering kit and on Saturday afternoon we loaded the bike on the truck for Atlanta which left Sunday morning March 26. We unloaded it on Friday and Rickey started making passes, the best of which was a 9.45. The best speed (different pass) was a 152.51. That ZX-12 has never had so much as a spark plug out. The whole deal about the gasket sealer is laughable. I’ve got to tell you, when we DO work on something, there are no gobs of Three Bond or anything else on the engine when we’re done. The production bike is, much as we expected (because history has shown us that this is usually the case) better in many respects than the Gainesville bike was.
Also, there were two ZX-12’s at Atlanta, (both green) ours and Ray Metzger’s. At Ray’s request, Rickey rode his bike in a Sportsman elimination run. As it happened the bike in the other lane was a Hayabusa. Rickey lost the race by virtue of a red light, but ran a 9.85, 144 mph which was a quicker time than the ‘busa. I’m sorry I don’t have the time as Mr. Metzger has the slip. The ZX-12 Rickey was riding at that time (Metzger’s) had a stock exhaust. I have also seen some references to Rickey riding at Mooresville on that Friday. He’s good, but not quick enough to be in two places at once. Bottom line is, as far as motorcycles go- we like ‘em all and we’ll just do our thing and make the best parts we can for each of them. I assure you that, when I bike is fast because of something we’ve done we won’t keep silent about it, we’ll tell everyone we can! Anyone with a question can E-mail me anytime at
