Gas mileage really sucks

07 Busa, all stock. Went to Virginia over the weekend and the mpg never read higher than 35.8 WTF?
In the city, in gets even lower. Can you guys give any ideas that might help this out? I have changed nothing in regards to air filters, exhaust, no power commander.
No, I am not always goosing it. I was trying for max mpg on my trip to test it. Something is just not right. I also have a backfire at 4500 rpm as I come off the throttle. Could the two be related?
Thanks guys, this is driving me nuts. With premium over $4, this is making me insane.

Try a lower octane and see how that works for you. Remember, the Busa only needs 87. Not only will you save money at the pump but using that high of octane may actually be hurting your mpg.

That bights. Could be the octane or the brand of fuel. Does it start hard or quit out? It may sound silly but I was down at my local mechanics last fall with car trouble and he pointed out that I could have water in my gas. He had just serviced a ladies car that stopped running after filling it up. He drained the tank and there was over a gallon of water in the fuel.
Other than that i run 91 in my busa cause any less will decrease mileage, also running gas with ethanol with mess with the bike.
normal riding gives me about 38town 44hyway mpg.
How many miles? If your under warranty have the dealer look it over. could be a loose wire or something. Good Luck

Actually running less then 91 is better unless you are runing NOS< Turbo or have increased your compression. Higher the octane the slower the burn. So if your bike does not need the higher octane you are just burning less efficient. It is correct about the ethanol however but most gas now has at least 10% in most areas of the country.

Mine has sucked from jump. The best I ever got was 31 or 32 MPG. The worst is 28. I get about 125-130 miles out of a tank.

I can cruise all day on my 06 at 95 mph and still get high 30s. I run mid grade, never below 89 octane. Time for a checkup. Good luck!

I would see about having the ECU re-flashed, perhaps it has some bad parameters in the map?  I think most are capable of running in the 40's if driven nicely..  if any of the FI sensors is bad (MAT, coolant)or disconnected (MAP), it could cause fuel mileage issues.. (but usually will throw a code)

Octane:  "a fuels ability to resist burning"     has nothing to do with burn speed or power output (BTU per gallon is the same)
Important please read signed Ninja Eater

unless you are having issues running regular, you are just throwing money away.. (ping/spark knock/detonation)  There is plenty of good information on the web on this.. (and a couple really bad ones)

I agree. The terms "Premium", "Mid-Grade", etc... were labels created by the marketing departments of the oil companies.

Some of you, like Darth Frosty, that can't get a decent MPG, and you've checked your throttle wrist, and you know it's not any aftermarket parts you've put on... Then something else is wrong:

* ECU?
* Bad gas? Try getting gas from another station, even from a different part of town, if you have to.
* Vacuum line(s) disconnected or leaky?
* extremely under inflated tires?

Just some suggestions.

Yep somethings not right with those numbers

I regularly got 48-50 out of my 03 with bolt-ons and a pcIII

Switch to 87octane. It'll work much better for your stock Busa. High test fuel isn't necessary for a stock bike.

35.8 and you think that's bad? My 08 is getting 31.8 if I'm nice to it.

It costs me the same amount to drive my car as it does to ride my bike. So I'm buying an 07 LE M109.

I get 38 to 40 mpg on the average, that's a little of moderate and agressive riding. When on the freeway traveling, I can get mid 40's mpg. The backfiring on decel, is coming from your PAIR valve, remove them.

I use to run 93 octane, and get an average in the high 40's to 50 mpg. (on highway). Everyone told me that I was waisting money, so I started to run 87. I've been using 87 for a while now, and was getting 38 to 42 mpg. 2 weeks ago I put 93 octane in, and my mpg. went back to high 40's ?? But I also got the 93 octane at a different gas station. This tank I'm going to try 87 from this station ??

always used 87 and bought from diffrent stations always averaged 40-47 never changes except for how i ride it

Thanks, I'll try the lower octane and the pair valve removal.
The gas mileage has never been very good, but now its just annoying. I have close to 10K miles on the bike, and no problems starting or shutting off. How does one get an ECU re flashed without losing an arm and a leg from the stealership?

I get mid to high 30's and I have R-22 cans, a K&N, 16-43 sprocket set and generally run the bike to 6500 or 7000 in town. I generally cruise the surface streets in 4th and only get 5th on 6th on the highway. My bike's got about 20 k on it. When I was all stock I was in the mid 40's short shifting at 5500.

So something does seem to be amiss with your set up.

I was getting 35mpg out of my stock 07 on 91 octane unitl i read here on the ORG the bike only required 87 no im getting 40.4 mpg on my last tank.
