(Spudley @ Jan. 21 2007,00:46) Brethren, and Sistren,

I'm glad it was a bounce, and "bounce-back".

The guy that sold me my first Dainese-armored leather, and helmet was an ex-racer that works a retail gig here in Las Vegas. He lost a testacle in an encounter with an uninsured motorist. Was in the hospital with other complications. So now he does track time, and trailers the ride back and forth. He has never stopped saying, "Gear for the encounter that may never come...".

Now don't get me wrong, we have a lot of squids here in Las Vegas that think gear is for pu$$ies. I've been pointed at, and laughed at while sitting at lights, but I'm sitting on a Busa so who's really laughing at who

. For what it's worth I think a "thank-you" is due, in your case to "Shoei", and "Joe Rocket" for just the right kind of protection at just the right time !!.

When a Granny comes at ya !!!.

The machine can be repaired, a little plastic, a little touch-up here and there....you're back on the road !!! The Busa forgives

, the concrete sometimes doesn't !!!.

Thanks for sharing your experience, now get out there and RIDE !!!!.

"RUBBER SIDE DOWN ALL THE TIME !!!".
I have never been laughed at for wearing my gear. at least not to my face.

But even if someone did it wouldnt change my attitude towards gear.

I have been down, and have seen enough people down without gear that some individual with little man syndrome laughing at someone wearing gear wont affect me.

In the end everyone usually comes to respect gear, or they die because they did not respect it.

And that is 20+years of riding experiance talking

I know this might be hard to believe, but the little town I grew up in and surrounding areas in Illinois, I NEVER saw anyone with gear on atleast on a sportsbike. this was in the 90's. I saw Harley guys in their leathers. Very few of us ever wore helmets. Now in Mo (helmet law) of course helmets, but alot of guys with gear.

No it is not hard to believe..

First time I road a motorcycle I didn’t wear anything (well, pants and a t-shirt

)

no helmet, no jacket.

When I purchased my first motorcycle, I bought a brand new helmet, and that was it. wore jeans and regular boots, and once in awhile I would wear a Suzuki nylon jacket and that was it.

Then a few dead friends later, and me hitting a school bus at about 75 miles an hour, I learned first hand the difference between having gear and not having gear

In the hospital after hitting the school bus, the point was driven home. Even though I had broken ribs, internal bleeding and gravel in my arms, my helmet saved me.

They put me in the same room with a guy who hit a mobile home on his motorcycle, he was wearing a helmet. I think back on it now and wonder if they put us in the same room on purpose.

Anyway, the entire side of his face was like ripped off. (dont rmemeber all the damage, it was a long time ago) guess he was lucky to be alive, but wasnt looking all that good. While I still maintained my rugged yet handsome looks

So for me, I have not always worn gear it has been a lesson I learned the hard way. Fortunately I was able to live long enough to learn the lesson. some of my friends in the past haven’t been so lucky.

"RUBBER SIDE DOWN ALL THE TIME !!!".

(mercury06 @ Jan. 20 2007,03:22) I have owned and been riding motorcycles for 30 years since my first RM80 at ten years old.  I have never dropped a bike in that time...but

many topics on this site say your 'busa WILL go down.  I never thought it would happen to me after riding dirt bikes and Harleys responsibly and defensively for 30 years.

I have heard the guys on this site talk about two types of riders, those that have fallen and those that are about to.

When I bought the bike the dealer never mentioned that it comes equipped with a cloaking device to make it invisible and there is no way to turn it off.

Two weeks ago I was pushed into a curb by a 52 year old woman in an '82 Astro van (with no insurance) on a clear, sunny, day.  Even pounding her passenger window before my front tire hit the curb did not get her attention.

I am glad I am using an alias for this next statement (aka early Pandemic):  I never rode my Harley's with a helmet unless it was raining and only wore a jacket when it was cold.

When I got my '06 Hayabusa last summer I broke down due to all the "gear queer" chatter on this site.  I felt silly putting on a jacket and full face helmet in 80+ degree weather down here is southern Florida.

My relatively low speed "tip over" destroyed my Shoei helmet, and ripped apart a Joe Rocket jacket and gloves.  The pavement ground through the plastic on the front and rear fender along with the Right Side fairing.

After the initial bouncing around for a second or two everything went still, and I thought...that was not so bad...until it started again,..and again.  (Its weird how being disoriented and flying through the air seems the same as laying on the ground.)

The bike is fixed and you would never know it was damaged.  I was "lucky" that only plastic and leather touched the ground.  The helmet was split but not my skull so luckily none of the **** leaked out.  This "light fall" cost about $1500 in parts, plus another $1K for the helmet, jacket and gloves.

To wear a helmet or not is a personal responsibility and should be ones own decision.  My decision is to wear a helmet until surgeons perfect the prodedure for replacing **** for brains on people like me who think the people who drop bikes are the ones who ride like A-holes.

Once again, thanks Gear Queers!!  Even if you did cost me $1200 in helmets.
Here @ the .ORG, we prefer the term "Gear Nazi's"

Here's a pic of my helmet after a little slide on the pavement...

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for staying on this topic long enough to get it through my thick head. When I bought my '06, I could not afford all of the gear that I wanted, so I put it off. While I have not been down "hard", I am glad that I now have the "protection".

Thanks everyone.

(ibified @ Jan. 20 2007,14:57) Jumping in late here, but I'm glad you made it too.  The conditions my wife put on me getting my busa was that 1) id wear a helmet all the time, 2) I'd wear a good riding jacket 3) I'd wear boots.  NOT A PROBLEM HONEY!  I'd like to be around to get old with her...
Amen!Thank God for gear!

I went down at 45mph on the freeway wearing FULL gear(freaking lane changing suvs).  Only a bruise on my side where the handlebar hit me.  No roadrash at all.  The bike was totalled.
