GEARING ??????'s

this is a post that warbaby put up.
this link and info should help.
thank warbaby for the info.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking about gear ratios in terms of countershaft sprocket and drive sprocket!? The ratios you posted are transmission gears and remain constant. The ratio you can readily change is the final drive ratio [countershaft (front) sprocket to drive (rear) sprocket]. Stock teeth are 17 front/40 rear for an overall drive ratio of 2.353:1. [40 divided by 17 = 2.353] The "best" ratio depends on what you want it to do. You can see the effects of gearing changes in a chart I created here: Excel Hayabusa Gearing Chart

Just change the front or rear sprocket teeth values in the chart's pink cells and you can see the effects on ratios, speed, RPM, etc. A lot of people just install a smaller front sprocket (16 teeth) with the stock 40 tooth rear sprocket for better acceleration (and a little less top speed) but there are many, many possible combinations. Play with the chart to see which effects suit your riding style.

Howdy,
I've been following this message board for a while now and decided I better register and get in the game.  This is a great source for technical information.  I've had my 02 Busa for a several months now and I'm planning on installing a 16 tooth front sprocket and a Yellow box recalibrator.  I'm addicted to the low rpm power of my custom 1500cc V-Max and want more of the same from my Busa.  I have two quetions:
1.  My new sprocket is made by Sprocket Specialists and looks a little cheap, has anyone had experience with this sprocket?
2.  Should I expect much of a change in gas mileage when cruising at 70-80 MPH on the highway?
Thanks

Welcome Busabyers. :D I can't really answer your question on gas mileage. I'm sure someone will, though. As for the Sprocket Specialists piece, that brand is supposed to be one of the good ones according to what I've read. Can you explain what makes it look cheap? :super:

The teeth on both sprockets I've purchased have grooves across the surfaces that contacts the rollers on the chain.  The grooves look like they were made from the stamping operation used to manufacture the part.  I guess I expected a secondary machining process to clean up these surfaces.  It looks like they may have used a tumbling process to de burr the sprocket however.  I've worked as a process engineer for many years so I've seen sprockets from many conveyor systems and they have always had more of a "finished" look.  These sprockets may be normal for street bikes, I don't know, my V-Max is shaft drive.

Ahhh, I see what you mean. Thanks for the photo. You must already know that we love photos here. :D

I'm heading the route of overdrive gears so i can keep alittle milage since my motor had to be pulled for overhaul as for milage question when i went to the 42 rear my milage droped from around 37mpg to 32 mpg but i ride hard alotta times and with the new mod ya know

So i'm hopeing to regain alittle milage by doing the overdrive gears kinda like haveing my cake and eating it too

the sprocket special is a good one, Im running a 42 tooth SS sprocket and its got just over7000 miles on it and it still looks like new. Ill more than likeley run them for a while untill I run into a problem. I just replaced the front with a JG sprocket and Im not impressed. Didnt look finished to me but who am I to judge.

g_calatean,

Your Excel Hayabusa Gearing Chart is lost to the board. Can you email it to me at wstasik@rostra.com?

I'm geared at 43/17 for 2.529:1. Only because that is what the dealer had and after 20,000 miles, I needed a new chain and sprocks real bad. I'm 5'8" at 185lbs. She's got a lil' more pep than the stock 2.353:1. I like it! I like i' alot!

Later!

I went to a 16t in the front and am going to wait until I get my arm before I put the 42 on the back, but she definetly had more umph. Messed the speedo up though. Does anyone have any info on the yellow box or speedo healo?

Train- You start going to the strip, and you won't care about riding the street as much!! That Sh*t's like crack!!!

While we're talking about gearing, can someone tell me the correct sprocket #'s if I want to go the other direction?

85% of my riding will be on the Autobahn at 100+mph and I'd appreciate all the mileage I can get.

Can I get away with an 18t in front and still retain the stock chain?  Maybe reduce 1-2 in back?  Any help is greatly appreciated!

well being that I started this topic oh bout 2 months ago... I finally put a 16t front. Like I said before I am a big guy. All I have to say is that I'm impressed of the outcome. I am not really sure if I will go higher than a 40 in the rear for a while.

Thanks everyone for the help
