A close friend of mine saw the Swedish version and said she could barely watch it all, so she refused to see the new one with me. She also read the books and said that was rough to get through too. I saw both, and I guess my tolerance for violence is so high, neither bothered me to the point that I wouldn't watch. It's not real...watching raw footage from the Holocaust is tough. Hollywood is not... :sarcasm:
The author of this series (Stieg Larsson, now deceased) witnessed a brutal gang rape when he was just 15, so I would say his writing that in to the story was something therapeutic, some way of telling a bit of what he witnessed and couldn't stop I would presume. It's a pivotal point in the original book, so of course Hollywood is going to expound on that to make a buck, but it's my hope they also wanted to hold true to the original story to honor the author. Real life happens; I never shy from that, as brutal as it may be...but, it's not for everyone.
