I have a DPMS LR-308 which is good to 800 meters. Magpul mags, free floated. 7.62x51
Trijicon scope. Inside an inch at 200m, inside a bad guy at 800m. Lots do 308 options nowadays.
Colt has a new one. Shop around, 7.62/308 is the up and coming long term. Short term is 300Blk which can be suppressed.

If I were looking to buy a complete rifle it would be from noveske
if you want best (or atleast better) but stay "cheap" id recomment a DPMS SASS. its a great rifle with all the bells and whistles u need.
I just finished building up a .308 for long range (my .223 just wasnt cutting it after 500 yards). Its a POF complete lower NP3 coated with JP trigger and PRS stock w/ mono-pod. Upper is POF w/ mono rail NP3 coated. NP3 coated bolt carrier group. JP match 22" 11.25:1 twist barrel with adjustable gas block and JP brake. Waiting on GAP to start selling their 13" mono rails so i can cover up my gas block/gas tube.

Yeah I have decided on the DPMS Recon. Has a lot of nice stock features. I can put the $$$$ into it later. My first upgrades will be a new handguard and buttstock. 308 is just way more appealing than the 223
I am just waiting to find a place that has them in stock. Cabelas is supposed to do some research and get back to me
. So far NO ONE has them and the estimated back order date is 10 months.

My friend just got a sick 7.62x39mm AR. Its close to a 5,000 dollar AR with all of the mods. I need to step my game up and begin to build my own, starting with this one that has a larger round than his
Thanks! I had been shooting an HK91 as my .308, but since ive been into reloading, the 91 just destroys brass. 
and the cost of .308 now adays is insane. plus i got a smoking deal on the POF upper/lower/rail that i decided to make it my build. The Recon you will enjoy. I would put the $ for the handguard and stock towards some decent glass. the handguard wont really change accuracy. the stock.. ehh, would help to go to a PRS or UBR later on. you can go with a aftermarket match trigger, or for cheap, get the JP Enterprise trigger springs and clean up the factory trigger.
