Got a Rattle

Bought my 05 in December 05 and I have the rattle under the tank, too. Glad this thread was revisited... I thought there was something wrong with the bike.

Have an 05 with Yosh bolt ons. Had dealer do the 600 miler and I changed oil again at 1500. Dealer advised to use 10-40 and I am doing so with Suzuki oil.
I have a metallic sounding rattle from under tank (?) when cold at about 2500rpms. Only until operating temp is reached, then it's gone.
the rattle you can hear is the cam chain. who doesn't have a cold start rattle from the right top side of the motor..?? mine has done it from day one when the motor is cold... the hydraulic tensioner is dependent on oil pressure... so cold motor.......lo pressure.....rattle........warm motor... hi pressure.... no rattle..............

For what it's worth, I don't THINK my '03 makes that noise - it could, as I haven't heard it run since early November. But I use Motul semi-synthetic 15w50 and am thinking that if my bike really doesn't make the noise, perhaps the heavier oil could be why.

There I was wondering if I should freak out about noises coming from the top end, stuff that could be valves or cam chain but that goes away when warm. Guess I will unbunch my panties and go ride the damn thing and not worry. Great thread!

Sounds like I have the same noise. 2006 Hayabusa LE
with 700 miles on it. Right side, engine rattle noise, loudest when cold. Goes away when engine is completely warm. Has done this since day one.
Only makes the noise at about 2000 rpm. Not above or below.
Planning on having the dealer take a listen soon.

Dam this board is great. I have an 06 and started get this noise about 500 miles. The dealer told me the cam chain tensioner might start this noise at about 900 miles or so.. So I was wondering. This clarifed it for me.

Went to the dealer. Let the bike sit for about 2 hours.
There service manager and mechanic listened to and heard the noise. They said its the timing chain tensioner trying to adjust. They recommended that I just ride the bike and put more miles on it. They said if I notice the noise getting worse, to bring it back in. But other wise that it was a normal noise.

So that's it??!! ".....just live with it"

Isn't there something that can be installed like a cam chain tensioner that Indy03BUSA was talking about?  I was going to take my bike into the dealer to see what they have to say about it.  But seeing that everyone else has that same rattle until it's warm, I don't want to get the run-around from the dealer saying they fixed it and all they did was adjust the tensioner.

The cam chain tensioner rattle we have been hearing should not be a problem to the general longevity of the motor unles it gets really loose (ie cold) and you rev it really high (im thinking 8k+) and for some reason have to shut the throttle suddenly (old lady making a left in front of you).  That could cause the difference between correct valve timing and chain lash induced valve timing to exceed spec and possibly bend a valve stem a little.  That in itself is not a going to make the engine quit so unless you just like farting around with engines (me) or you are rebuilding the cam chain tensioner can probably wait awhile.

My .02 dollars
