(VaBusa @ Aug. 31 2007,07:21) It's like the seatbelt laws...so many hate 'em and hate that "The Man" gives out tickets if you don't have yours on, blah blah blah blah. What's ironic to me is that IF the gov't laid down laws stating WE HAVE to wear all of this gear, you'd be b*tching about that as well...
Just like the helmet law controversies from state to state.
We all make our own choices based on what level of risk you feel you can afford in your life. For the guy that doesn't gear up, he/she may just as easily talk about how completely INSANE we are for riding a Hayabusa, or ANY sport bike for that matter. They may think the extra risk in owning a fast bike warrants more gear, and it doesn't matter if you agree with their opinion on the matter or not. It's apples and oranges. I do what I feel I should FOR ME and hope those that don't wear the gear, like my husband and most of my riding buds, never go down. I can assure you, I'd never treat ANY rider that goes down any differently, gear or no gear, sport biker or Harley rider...none of us should die because we like to ride, and we certainly shouldn't judge fellow riders based on their own level of perceived risk.
And it's an unfortunate part of riding in general that we will always have inexperienced riders, those that feel "that would never happen to me", those that allow the adrenaline to take over in the heat of the moment and make the wrong decisions that could lead to their demise. Gear or no gear, those types of riders are the ones I truly hope sites like this "get through to"...if after all of the reading from the mistakes of others, we still have some that opt to not gear up or run from the cops, it's an "informed decision" on their part IMHO and one that I surely can't hate someone for...adults are allowed to make decisions for themselves, period...
It IS irresponsible for any parent to toss a child on the back with minimal protection. Kids trust their parents implicitly and haven't been around long enough to form their own opinions on what risk really is, so that's my only complaint when it comes to the lack of gear for a rider.
