I am one of those nuts who has been an athlete all my life, no medication ever, can’t remember when last I saw a doctor.
So, for me personally I believe in accident insurance but have no interest in healthcare.
If I look at the average person my age, it is scary to see what shape they are in. I am not sure I would want to be alive if that was my condition.

So I am curious, how many of the seniors here are medication and doctor free?

How old are you? At 62 I am med free. I do have a hernia which I keep putting off getting fixed because of the mesh issues they have had.

Oh and don't forget VIAGRA HA HA...just kidding.

LOL 67. Last time I saw a doctor was when I fell off the bike at 142mph on the WV Shenandoah track. Thought I might have broken something, that was in 2011. LOL if you do weights, body produces it’s own Viagra.

I do weights every day (nothing too heavy) and wear a hernia belt most of the time.

I am not near your age (44) and i am not on any meds. I do have some issues most are from being a little on the lazy side i think. Ultimately good health though. I too do not bother with docs and i work for a major health system :)

We have a decent healthcare system here in Canada, I am used to getting a medical every 2 yrs when I was serving but haven't had one since I retired.

I have the usual work related ailments (arthritis, plantar fasciitis, hearing loss, etc) but only take medication for acid reflux. I watch what I eat as to not irritate it but found it is a hereditary thing, almost everyone in my family has it.

I have to get back into my work out regime....

Well I’m 50 and the only meds I take are for sleeping. I have been on all the PTSD meds the dr can imagine and they either make me a zombie, or so amped up it’s unreal so I won’t take them. Just to help sleep and get through the nightmares. I need to get healthier though. Wish I was med free. I hate meds. As for dr free, I hate drs so I try to stay away. Med insurance here is ridiculous and I will die before I go to the VA ever again

I'm on no medication for PTSD, went to see a Psychologist for a few years and she knows her business...she uses EMDR (Eye Movement Deprogram, Reprogram) to treat it. I was skeptical of course but it works. It alleviated almost all of the symptoms, I will never be 100% again but I can live with that.

That I can say is not a treatment I have tried. I stopped going to the head dr because all of them just threw pills at me. The last one I tried I think just graduated from kindergarten. Seriously. Could have sworn she was 12. I asked if she served. I asked if she saw what we saw and did what we did. When she answered NO, which I knew, I asked her then how she was qualified to be in my head. Maybe that was misguided on my part but that’s the last one I saw for this. I just remove myself from social settings when it all goes fubar.

The one I saw/see is great, she doesn't believe in medication..the shrinks I saw while serving wanted to throw pills at me (which I didn't take).

It would be hard to find a Psychologist that experienced what you did as they normally wouldn't be exposed to the same sort of thing even if they served.

It might be an idea to shop around for the right one if you think you need one-mental health carries a huge stigma with it. I ignored the symptoms for years and it made my and my family's life hell for a while. Best thing I did was to realise I had a problem and get treatment. Life is worth living now.

As for me personally, I'm 33. Overall average healthy. If I'm injured, I'll go to the ER but I absolutely under no circumstance will take any narcotic pain medication. Due to past addiction, I fear slipping down that path again....which is kinda ironic because we give Morphine, Ketamine, and Fentanyl all day long.

Being 36 and taking good care of myself with exercising and diet I had never the need of taking any medication. If i am really sick I will take some Ibuprofen but that's it.
As @GAmedic mentioned before- I refuse to take any opioids/narcotics.Not because I have a history of addiction - just because I refuse to take it. I am amazed (thru my profession) how many people- middle age and older- take regular meds. Every day...several different types. Sadly most of them could be avoided by a simple lifestyle change.

…..I kind of remember being 36......I was a machine in those days...

...You mean it gets worse from here?
No seriously...And I know all the older guys are laughing now - Since I hit 30 I recognize SIGNIFICANT changes. I was truly bulletproof up to this point. Now....all those little things start and add up.. Lord help me it does not get worse lol

It won't get worse....at 36 I was a lean, mean fighting machine. I found after 50 I slowed down some but can still go hard when needed.

Of course I was in the military and lived a culture of physical fitness.

As the OP here already stated. There is a HUGE difference if you are AND have been physically active.I see this on a daily base. I know some guys in their late 60s and they did sports all their life. They are better looking, fitter and healthier than some of the mid 30 year olds.
Especially the food choices are a problem here. And of course the lack of moving and training at the end of the day...!

It sure makes a difference if you've been active...

I had a very good friend of mine drop dead during a Terry Fox run a few years ago...he was extremely fit, ran and biked all the time, hung out in the weight room with me. He didn't smoke or drink very much, never used any drugs prescription or otherwise and was very even tempered...

Made me really paranoid about if I was doing everything I could be healthy.

One never knows...

Those are rare cases of underlaying issues or causes. Its the same with certain type of cancers for example- Totally healthy people suddenly get it. Its genetic and nothing you can do about it sadly!

Yep, the key is not to lose muscle mass and build fat. The mind and the body is a powerful machine. One can teach it to do 100 miles on a bicycle in 5 hours without going too hard, or one can teach it to drink a case of beer every day. It adapts. It's all about choices.
