Helmet Mods and tweaks

I haven't said anything before because... well I just didn't..

Anyway, if anyone is interested in some cool stuff for helmets let me know...

My friend / Co-worker has been working with HJC and Sportview (the company that is making the heads up display for helmets) and a few other company's

He is into tweaking helmets pretty good.

Currently I have installed in my helmet some bright, red lights that are powered by a thin battery located in the helmet. the lights last for a long time.

Others areas of interest are, he has patented installing a fan in the front of the helmet that toally defogs the visor and circulates airflow through the helmet.

And, last but not least, he showed me yesterday some prototype visors he got back that him and some other guy are sharing a patent on. Now this is cool, saw it myself. Re-active visors.

In the dark, the visors are clear, when light hits them they begin to darken. Full sun light that are fully reactive. He can get them done in mirror and smoke and he can get them done in different colors.

The one he got back from the lab yesterday did not go as dark as we both would like, he is waiting for some SHOEI visors to come back from this other company.

The visors we checked out yesterday are for HJC helmets.

HJC ships this guy helmets whenever he asks, I have seen the guy on the phone calling HJC and tell them " I need 3 of this model helmet, and 2 of this model for a mod I want to install" they tell him no problem and ship them out the same day, and yes, no cost to him, he does the mods and sends them back for the company to check out.

He just had four HJC helmets with his mods being shown by HJC at a bike show in Germany a few weeks ago.

So if anyone is interested in any of this stuff and want more information, let me know and I can put you in contact with this guy.

Has your buddy done any work with putting a rear view mirror system in a helmet? That would be hot (as long as it didn't fug up the aerodynamics too much)...no more need for mirrors on the bike.

Any news with the HUD from sportview? That looks like a neato project as well.

The part my friend is working on with the Sportview people is the power source.

Apparently one draw back to the Sportview is the size of the power pack.

My friend has been working on helmet mods that require power for a while now so he has really got an edge on power vs size down.

So he might be providing the power for the next gen sportview products (maybe) he is still talking with them. But they have liked what they have seen.

Not sure how you could do a rear view mirror system.

In order to not mess with aerodynamics it would have to be inside the helmet which means video feed vice a mirror system.

But the simple answer is no, he has not.. but I will pass the idea on to him.

If anyone wants to contact my friend about these helmet mods his email address is purplenght@yahoo.com

His name is Kerry

If you are into really cool stuff for helmet mods, check him out and see what he has to offer

I have toyed with the idea of a closed circut camera system on a helmet the camera is mounted in the back and using a small screen in the corner of the visor just have not seen one that i liked that worked well yet mostly cause of the screen and obsturcion now if you could some how get the screen in the visor on on a HUD then you'd be smoking good idea

The reactive visor i wouldn't mind and heck i have HJC Cl 14 helmet

He is getting some Shoei visors in, since I have a Shoei RF-900 I am going to see if I can get one from him to check out. If it darkens alot, it is going to be sweet. as it is now I carry two visors with me usually when I go for extended rides. one dark and one clear.

This will be cool to have ONE visor

I would definitely take a visor if he made one for an Arai. The rear view camera would be really sweet to have, you would need a really good camera thogh to make it usefull. Sounds like this guy needs a web site Thrasher.

hey Thrasher, you should post a pic of your helmet with the red lights on, they are actually kind of cool.

hows the desert, nice and dry???

Hey Thrash, I have a Shoei TZ-1, I know I could really go for one of those auto tinting models.

Where do you carry your spare face shield?

How about auto tint with Blue Blocker. Or Mirror/Dark Smoke combo or Blue blocker/Mirror/Dark Smoke(during the Day). as well as SPECTRA Mirror etc...

I almost always wear a back pack I purchased just for use when I ride. I place the spare shield in the back pack curved side down, then might pack a spare shirt of top of it.

I also carry my water in there and other items.. So for me it is not TOO much of an extra hassle, I would wear the back pack anyway. But it would be nice to have one less thing to carry AND it would be nice to not have to swap visors.

There was one time I was riding back from Reno at night and I should have pulled over and spent the 10 minutes to take my back pack off, pull everything out get the visor, change visors and put everything back. But I just didn't feel like messing with it. So I hit my high beams and just dealt with the lower visibility.

HJC? That stands for the Helmet Junk Company. When he starts modifying Arai, and Arai only, you can start posting info here again. Until then you're banned from the site.

Your Right, if you have money to waste then go with Arai. I love how people have a helmet and automatically it is the best one on the market. Arai is not good for all people, Everyone has a different head shape and not all helmets will fit the same. If a helmet is passing snell and DOT inspections, what make it less quality then arai? I have seen Arai helmets split open too. If a bicycle helmet stops you from spreading your brains on the highway, then it is a good helmet. You can payfor the name Arai all you want. Im not saying it is a bad helmet, just don't put others down because it isnt what you use.I bet HJC sells a lot more helmets then Arai does. I don't like either HJC or Arai, but I don't say they suck.

First off. Ban THIS

Second. I can see you slamming HJC, and I can understand you slamming Scorpion because well.. some people just enjoy slamming things they know nothing about.

I cut you some slack on the other thread because I was honestly keeping an open mind to the fact maybe you knew something I didn’t.

However when you state Arai is the only helmet.. well then that opens my eyes a little.

Shoei and Simpson as far as I am concerned are probably two of the best helmets on the market. I would classify Arai a little better than an HJC.

However as I stated in my other thread, I have no stats on any of the helmets (I.E. how many pounds of force does it take to split a helmet open, is the helmet one sold mold peice or is it made of two half shells, what type of inner shell is in the helmets and what is the ability of the inner shell to absorb impact.

Provide me stats. Give me links that back up your claim.

If you can provide me hard facts backed up by scientific / test data that Arai is the best helmet, and or test data that Scorpion helmets suck, or that HJC helmets suck. Then I would be more than happy to review the data and make an educated decision as to the best helmets out there.

But to get on here and start slamming a product based on mere conjecture or personal opinion without test data is kind of.. well unfare and wrong.

Carry on.

don't worry about it thrasher, I have seen that he has been basically putting everyone else and their bikes down. I seen a thread he responded to about someone adding chrome to their bikes, he made the comment that chrome is for harleys. I think he just thinks he is above and better then everyone else on here. I have not seen him actually write a constructive post or make a positive comment to help anyone. He probably doesn't even own a busa. I'm suprised that Revlis or some of the other vets here haven't ripped into him yet for putting everyone else down.
