I can't stand the thought of friends riding with cheap non-certified helmets.

(Still, try on the Shoei, it's a fantastic helmet if it fits your head)

Along with the higher price tags of the quality helmets you will get a lighter weight. That can translateinto more comfortable riding without struggling against the wind and vibration. Also you can benfit with longer riding times before a sore neck. I have a Shoei and love it. I also have an HJC CL-14 for a backup but it is heavy and not as forgiving with aerodynamics.

I also wear an RF1000 and love it. The ventilation is superior to the HJC that I had and the weight difference is rediculous. The Shoei is waaaay lighter and fits my noggin pretty good. After going from HJC to Shoei I def wont go back.

It all depend's how it fit's you.As long as it is approved you will be ok. you have to be comfortable in it.I spend more on offroad helmet's than road helmet's.Usually the more the helmet cost the more optoin's it has, removable liner, you can get different thickness cheek pad's to fit them better, better hardware, better shield choice, nicer paint, weight, noise.I have an exo 400 for the road(135$)but I have a 400$+ troy lee for offroad.I always had better luck with shoei or arai and now the troy lee as far as quality then a cheaper helmet.I'am sure it goes along the same lines with street helmet's.

You pay more for the high end helmet paint schemes and rider endorsements as well. I usually buy the plain solid color helmets and save a few bucks.

I wear my Scorpion all the time. But when I use to ride with my wife I would let her wear it, and I would wear my HJC, it's quiter, but my neck starts hurting after about an hour.

I went from a 80 HJC that was approved to a Shoei RF 1000 and would never go back. Beyond the fact the Shoei was with me when my head hit the ground and I'm still around. I was so impressed I bought another one. However I didn't buy either from the dealership I bought new close outs from ebay get them at half price. Just check the sales record of the seller and your good. I just use the dealership to try the fitting. They are marking those helmets up around 200 dollars.

One of the reasons Arai, Shoei and Suomy are more expensive is because they spend some of the money you pay for research, development and design.  I support this completely.

Indeed, they use higher quality materials, take exterior shell aerodynamics, air through-flow, durability, shock absorption (among other aspects) into consideration in their construction and manufacture, and in many cases, will have better warranty and customer support.

I own five helmets and have just ordered two more.

Two (gorgeous) Icons (my 'poser' helmets), two Arai, and (after the new ones arrive) three Shoei.  When I go shredding in the canyons, it's always, ALWAYS, the Shoei. I think you can see where I'm headed with my personal assessment/endorsement.

Remember this, always...you only need your helmet to work for you, once.

Ride safe, ya'llz.

Why 7 helmets? I can understand two maybe three. (one extra for you, one for a passanger)

here's a weird perspective: ALL helmets can crack. on a get off, an expensive helmet can crack just as easily as a cheap helmet... not due to the helmet's construction but due to the impact itself. You will never know if the impact will be cracking your expensive helmet or not. Are you more protected from a harder shell? Not if the accident impact says you aren't. See what I mean? It's hard to explain.. it's always 50/50

yes, I'd stick with DOT AND SNELL as they have been tested to a standard but the ACCIDENT dictates the destruction. Nothing you can do about that.

Except WEAR a helmet as opposed to NOT wearing. In all cases, a helmet hitting first is better than your head hitting first

With the expense you're paying for a name, as far as saftey goes. You'll be just as safe wearing a $75.00 helmet as you will with a $500 one, as long as they are both DOT and SNELL approved. The more expensive ones can, however, be much lighter, more comfortable, etc. They do have their advantages, but as far as protection goes, it's the same.

annnd on a helmet note... research=$, better materials=$, quality=$, and graphics=$

yeh I at the dealer (performance in pineville, nc) they wanted $515 for my helmet and I got it online for $410 to my door. Just had to do an hour or so of searching to find the deal. Next cheapest I saw was $460 plus shipping.

OK, here is a helmet question. What about the quick snap adapters that you can put on the straps that you snap together, then push buttons to release?

They seem sturdy enough to me. My thought is if I hit hard enough to break the connectors apart, the strap probably would have crushed my throat anyway.

Must be DOT and Snell - then Comfort - then price.
The Shoei RF1000 isn't the cheapest, but is very comfortable for me.

I swear by my RF-1000, left my brain intact so I could feel the pain everywhere else
