HELP! REV's One year anniversary... And a problem.

Hmm...

If I can Bargain Chuck down in price you guys are making a lot of sense... Then again, I can buy a lot of tools for $500 and I can fix my own stuff... Maybe? I have a service Manual... I'm reasonably mechanically inclined, just skeered, I guess...

Let me hear you folks, I really appreciate the input.

-My thoughts thus far are this.
1. Bike is a toy only, so in theory if it goes boom, I can prolly do the repairs myself with some help from the board, even if it takes a few weeks...
2. The idea of having to replace/or recognizing I need to replace a valve or something is pretty damned scary... Do I have the Balls To dig into my Bike?
3. I have yet to ever actually use an extended warranty on a product I bought one for... Not once in like 8 purchases...
4. If my billable rate less than $75 and hour but it takes me twice as long OR MORE to perform a given repair, is it worth it?

Damnit Raider Makes a lot of sense!!! But so Does G-n-T...

I'm still on the damn fence... It's not the end of the world either way I guess...

I've never bought an extended warranty on something that hasn't had a problem during the initial warranty period. I'm with whoever said that if it ain't broke yet, it prolly won't. FWIW, on another note, I'm not knockin' yer ridin' bro because I'm confident that you could and would outride me by a long fuggin' shot, but I don't think you ride hard enough to hurt a busa drivetrain.

I say spend the money on tools and GROW SOME BALLS when it comes to tearin' 'er apart! That'd be my course of action... if I actually had $500.

I know when Suzuki asks me to pay that kind of money for the extended warranty I'm not gonna do it. My opinion is that these bikes are pretty durable, well sorted out and what you said above Rev makes sense as well. If something were to happen you and I know we could come here for help or advice. Or there would be someone to lend a helping hand.

You dont really read or hear about anything major happening to these bikes. The service guys when I asked them about the duability of this bike, they told me they were really strong and the only problems they have seen are from the guys who drag race them or drop the clutch alot.

All the bikes I have owned I have never had a problem after the initial one year warranty has expired. I still own a 97 Suzuki TLS, 22k miles, Suzuki's first V-twin, the bike runs great, no problems at all.

Just my thoughts

An extended warranty is really an insurance policy. Do you carry comp and coll insurance on the busa? We don't anticipate dropping the bike or having someone else cause it to drop but it sure is comforting to know if something happens we won't get stuck with a $3000.00 bill. These new bikes have lots of parts and pieces that are way expensive. And they do break after 1 year. I bought the warranty at a discount from the dealer and I sleep better at night knowing I will not be responsible for a high dollar repair if something should break. The warranty, just like comp and coll insurance, is for piece of mind. My vote---YES.

It does occur to me that everything that is likely to wear out or break is not covered under warranty, IE Consumables, Brakes, levers, Clutches, etc... This kind of stuff doesn't concern me. I am kinda thinking that I go ahead and upgrade the Starter gear and install the shield thingi that protects your case. then I really do not feel I have anything else to worry about. And if something huge goes boom, I can allways wait a few months then dish out the $2-3K if thats what it takes...

BULLET. I ride Lilah hard, but I ride her the way she is supposed to be ridden, do I tickle the limiter sometimes? Yes, do I crunch through the gears and slip the heck outta my clutch? No. So more than likely Lilah is going to die a horrible death at my hands before anything really bad happens mechanically... Ugly thought...

Come on Rev...you're a kept man! Lilah goes *poof* and your little wife will eventually replace her 'cause she doesn't want to see your pouting mug sitting on the couch!

Don't buy it...

I decided not to buy it based on one thing...it's a bike...it can be replaced fairly easily should it just blow up in my driveway...I'm out $9500, so I try to save that up again and buy another...

I'm not made of money by any means...live paycheck to paycheck just like everyone else, but it's just a $9500 bike...it's not like we've got Lambos or something...just take care of it and hope for the best!

Okay... I'm a dorky financial analyst by profession so I always look at this question as a math/probability problem. Keeping in mind that I'm in PA and not Tampa, I put a lot fewer miles on my bikes than you would.

$500 is your sunk cost for this warranty. Therefore, you're betting that you will incur *AT LEAST* $500 worth of warranty work during the time that it covers you. Multiply the probability by the amount of work necessary, and you'll see what kind of deal it is... ie, 50% of $1000 worth of repairs, 25% chance of $2000 in bills, 10% chance of $5000... and so on.

Now factor in what the bike's worth if you sold it (both now and at the end of the warranty period)... and consider the hassle that you'd get from Suzuki and/or the dealer if you brought it in for repairs... and if there is a deductible, that has to be added in as well...

Bottom line, if it didn't make them a ton of money, they wouldn't offer it!

Push Push... nudge nudge...Buy the damn Warranty...
Remember its transferable should you decide to buy Suzuki's
new 06 SuperBusa.
Just to tear into the engine. Not fix it just find out what's
wrong will cost $300+. Plus the peace of mind...

Oh yeah and I won't razz ya about not getting it either...
THAT's gotta be worth something???

Skipped thru the rest of the post...Rev I just freaked my bike up pretty bad...Twisted the output shaft right off...My bike is two years old...I had the extended warranty and it covered it...Of course I have a cool a$$ dealer and that helped a bit...Anyway it's like 9hrs @ $66 per hour labor just to get to the damn shaft...So you do the math...You may never use it but what if you need it...I've bought new bikes back to back and have had and used the extended warranty on both...

I will offer my worthless .02 cents. On my blazer I bought the extended warantee and was a little uneasy with my choice. Then at about 80,000 miles my EGR valvle was randomly acting up but also my fuel injectors and what not were not workin properly. They couldnt determine the EGR right away. They however replaced all of the fuel injectors, assemblies, alot of other internal components then the EGR. The total bill was twice that of the exteneded warrantee. A week later a complete tranny rebuild with a "NEW" warrantee for it. So nearly a rebuilt engine with a $35 deductible.

So I say it depends on the shop taking care of you. I bought it on my 01. It's apparent my bike has been modified cosmetically. My shop still honors the extended warrantee. They replaced the radiator and oil cooler the first time, oil cooler lines, and some other issues. So for my little $400+ dollars it was worth it. I usually dont believe in them but my local shop is great so for me it was worth it.

Rev I still see your enigma alot of good arguments.  I have put a bigger sprocket, speedo healer, pc3 custom map.  I don't think they would honor the warranty on my bike.  I am not going to get one.  I figured that I will take it as a challenge to fix it.  Hopefully no one will remember what I have said when I post about how much it is costing me to fix it.

Hijack on

BigBSBusa  where are you going?  Are you going to make it to Rucker?

Hijack off

Heck no, I wouldn't get lucky enough to go back to Rucker. I'm off for my second trip to Kuwait and Iraq.

Well Folks... Thus far the "NO BUY WARRANTY" boys are ahead by a few...

If I buy tools and parts, my labor is free... I have a garage... Do I have the Balls???

I can pay Johny Cheese a $30 an hour phone consulting fee... or I can post my questions here right? Do the work myself, really get to know my Busa... Learn something new, no longer be held hostage by the dealers service... Hmmm....

Like VA said (SORRY VA BTW) The House mouse will prolly buy me a new one if I funk things all up... Hmm....

Well Rev, guess if you're not as mechanically inclined, may want
to go with the extension huh. Well, that would be me hmhmhmhm.
Guess I may just fork over the money. If you can do most of
the necessary repairs/mods/maintenance you may need to follow
your gut and get a good tool set and consultation if need be.

Hey Rev,

I personally don't think it's necessary. I've had mine for two years now without a blip. I take care of my bike just like I take care of my other vehicles. I make sure the oil is changed every 3000 miles, adjust and clean chain when needed. I also pull both my wheels and re-pack a lil' grease to the bearings. Trust me this is definitely a good practice. A buddy of mine called me on Friday and his rear wheel had just about completely locked up.

Basically what I'm trying to say is if you take care of your bike, it will take care of you.
