Help with gearing for the quarter

right now i have 18/38 gears for top end but i also like to take it out to the strip. i had 16/42 gears when it was setup for the strip. my problem is i like to do both top speed and quarter and switching the sprockets out each time is hell, especially the front one. what i wanted to know is if there is a way i can keep the 18t front sprocket and just have to change out the rear when i need to. if so what size rear sprocket should i use on the strip to go with the 18t front and give me the same gearing as a 16/42 combo?

18/47 is going to be very close to the 16/42. IMA, the chain would be more of a pain than the front sprocket. I say that, but might re-think it when I change mine tonight.

yeah - but you will need another chain or a section of chain with two clips and that (2 clips) is not a good idea.

yeah i have 2 chains, one is the ek drz which i use for dragging, and the other is an ekZZZ which i had to modify to accept the clip on master.

so is it wise to put on a 47t rear? would there be any extra stress on the engine or drive chain compared to the 16/42 combo

im just confused as to why people change to a 16t front if all you need to do is keep the 17 and go up a lot extra in the rear. what the explanation for that?

thanks

The only bad side I can see is the extra weight. There would be much less stress than the 16 front. Some think the 16 front is too small. I would agree for high hp applications, but think it is fine for near stock apps using a good chain.  I think most change the front to keep from changing chains or shortening the wheelbase because of the larger rear sprocket. That is my reason anyhow.....

I just put mine back in street trim. In the process changed the front sprocket. It did not take much time at all. I don't like the way it feels cruising at 75-80 with the 16-40. the 16-42 really sucked. I also swapped a 42 on my street wheel. All in all it too about 90 minutes to swap everything out. Swap rear wheel assembly, front sprocket, adjust shock settings, raise rear 1.5 inches, remove strap, swap seats, install mirrors, clean numbers off of it, adjust tire pressures and test ride down the block. If I'm happy with the 17-42 on the street, I'll have to add chaniging the speedohealer settings. I think I could do it all in less than an hour without distractions. you should be able to easily run 16/40-44 17/40-43 with the same chain. Might even be able to add another tooth to that.
