Yeah, but which front brake do you use? I prefer using the right caliper for street and the left for racing conditions.

Me?, sarcastic? Nooooooooo......

both, 80/20?maybe. The 1st thing I do is adj. my rear brake so I can have a light touch, and with pratice use it in different ways. Light touch meaning I have mine adj. so when I press the pedal down normal amount it aplies the pressure to the pads lightly. I have to really want to lock up the lock up the wheel. But still holds fine on hills and not so much that I don't have farely normal braking( that is from the praticing with new adj. thingy)If you do play with the adj. of the pedal go a little bit at a time to find your sweet spot.

But CharlesBusa nailed it "most don't pactice enough with it".

slow street riding: front brake only

motogp wannabee trackdays: front brake only - like the pros, like other expereinced track guys, like the AMA guys that win, like Anna told me

32k miles and only replaced the rear once the first few months that I own the bike.

(Charlesbusa @ Jan. 11 2007,12:10) Because most riders don't have the skills or dedication to practice maximum braking.  I recommend using the front brake only.  Its what I do.  The slight benefit the rear provides in braking isn't worth the risk of getting tossed to me.

Anyway, that's my opinion

Great answer. When you have front brakes that will stoppie the bike with one finger, the 1/10 of a second before all weight transfers off the rear wheel will NOT benefit any but the best, most dedicated track riders out there. For the rest of us, practice keeping it at impending lockup with just the front for panic stops and call it good.

Ok, perfect scenario for you.

Today riding home from work I left the stoplight pretty quick.  As I get up to about 45-50 miles per hour this woman on her cell phone, talking to her kid in the passenger seat turns left out onto the road.  When she gets right in front of me in my lane she stops dead instead of moving into the turning lane.  She NEVER even looked at my lane of traffic.

I had about 50 feet to stop.  (Very rough guess)

I eased into the front brake as I applied pressure to the back.  The back locked up almost immediately and I ended up fishtailing.  I *BARELY* avoided this accident.  The front tire stopped about 3 inches from the door of her SUV.  I was leaning on the horn the entire time trying to get her attention so she would move.  Even after the horn caught her attention she just sat there staring at me.  I could tell by the look on her face she knew I was having a hard time keeping it under control but she just froze.

After I stopped next to her truck she jammed it into reverse and spun tires backwards across two lanes of the road into the parking lot she came from to get out of the way.

I just shook my head, took a deep breath and carried on.  Actually I Wasn't even shaking or anything, it happened so fast.

Let me just say I am ASTONISHED at how easy that back tire locked up.  This was also the coldest day I have ridden on, it was 27 degrees when I went into work this morning.  I think that may have something to do with it.

you must coast to all of your stops

I apply a little rear then the front about 80/20 like most of the guys. MSF course recommends you use both on a regular basis so you can be more effective in a panic stop since you have a feel for the lock up point.

I use whatever I need for whatever Iam doing ! You'll learn from miles and miles with practice and more practice. I use only the front sometimes, back only sometimes and both sometimes. Just depends on what I need the bike to do
