High Octane Unleaded

Anyone running higher octane gas than the 92 premium stuff recommended in the manual? Do I run increase the risk of hosing something up by running higher octane gas? I'm thinking about trying a tank in my '98 ZX11.

Thanks for any constructive input

I always run the highest available, on my Jap bikes & my Harleys. After engine teardowns it seems to keep the valves alot cleaner.

Sunoco Ultra 94 sometimes,,it's that,, mobil,,or ammoco for my Busa.

Commercially available pump gas shouldn't be too much of a problem. If you try to go to a racing gas you will run into some mixture problems. I have seen engines run cooler on race gas once the mixture is right. A good c16 (116 octane) is about all you can get. We used to buy Socal blue, which tested out at 125 octane, but the EPA shut them down for killing off a small country.

I'd stay away from AV gas. The emulsifying agents they us tend not to rpm well. Planes NEVER see the kinds of rpms you do. You can put octane booster in with it, but at that point you might as well run race fuel.

Your fuel injection is designed to run on pump gas though.

I have been using 100 and 110 Union 76 racing fuel. I love the way it smells, as far as performance I havn't noticed any difference.

My Hayabusa responds well to the odd tank of Jim Beam. But be cautious about using the low proof local stuff as it will gum nozzles and seals. What you want is the higher-octane 180 proof version that's distilled in off-shore protectorates, minor principalities and third world Caribbean sand bars like Cuba.

It's expensive at only 40 miles to 4 bottles, but if you get a cut-out problem in the middle of nowhere, you're not going to go thirsty like the other guys on this thread.

Trust me on this one Bob.

Would a Busa guy lie to a ZX11 guy?

Pete you kill me! LOL

There is a man that loves his bike, sort of like people who have pets and feed them people food on the idea if it's good enough for me then it's good enough for them.

Pete please don't tell me you sleep in the garage with her too.

Hey DP, did you have a life before you bought your Hayabusa? You seem to have your arse stuck by the computer. Maybe I should send you some Ex-Lax.

Hey DP, did I touch a nerve? Actually I was looking forward to meet you. Plenty of good looking girls in the area to stare at than our ugly mugs, ask Ian, or Bert, we don't look at each other when we talk, lol. Relax ol' man. Can't you take a joke? Besides, I always look for your next post, and see what you're thinking every hour, you make my day.

I use 112 Octane Race fuel, runs 4 bucks a gallon, but I see higher performance, where I was running 6.8 and 6.9, I am running low 6.6's now.

Peace,
Ranger

I allways get my 180 proof from a guy in black and white running down a georgia mountain in a 40 ford.

I didn't know it was distilled in off-shore protectorates, minor principalities and third world Caribbean sand bars like Cuba.

All things being equal, if there is no detonation then higher octane shouldn't give more power. But I suspect that these newer engine management systems adapt to the gas quality. It may be that with higher octane the timing advances some which could give more power. Does the Busa have a knock sensor?? Also there may be some exhaust analysis feedback too. Not sure. I ran a tank of race gas through my Busa and it seemed to make a real difference. I was unbiased since the only reason I had the race gas was because that was all they had at the track. Since then I use Texaco premium for no good reason.

Any given motor will make the most horsepower at the threshold of engine knock. The problem is that if you go beyond that threshold, engine damage occurs in short order. For this reason, it is best to use fuel with a SLIGHTLY higher octane than needed to prevent engine damaging knock (also known as detonation). For a stock compression Hayabusa I would think that a 93 octane gas would make the most power. Any mods such as higher compression pistons, head milled, turbo, nitrous...I would use the highest available octane fuel available to me. A slight decrease in power is worth the insurance against breaking a motor. I speak from experience here....Thomas G.

OK Waltman, no grief. Yes I guess you touched a nerve because I've taken hits on that subject before, and because I didn't see any humor in your post.

I freely admit I'm full of **** . But I want make sure it all gets posted here before I Ex-Lax it.

And Hapo is right. I've got my head stuck in a computer all day for a living, so looking for interesting stuff here and posting some **** is a little break for me from time to time. If you think I type a lot of words here, you should see how much writing I have to do for work...most of it totally devoid of nonsense and motorcycles...which are the 2 things, after my family, that I care about most.

DP Jack Daniels and Montecristos await your visit at Stir Crazy. Let us know when.

My official Busa shop manual says 87 octane is what we're supposed to use. That's 87 via the R+M/2 method of rating octane. Truly it does say that alcohol based gas can be used too. I wonder what the RWHP is running on 'shine?

Yeah I know.. I'm a guy who gets his motorcycle fix reading the shop manual.

At the Suzuki cup finals at Road Atlanta this year, we gained 5 hp on our 750 SuperSport bike by using Nutec fuel (light blue drum).

Seems to me this was 112.

One of the best writeups on gasoline is the 4 part FAQ listed below. There is an incredible wealth of information in this writeup.

On the page there will be links for parts 2-4.

Part 3 starts with the item of interest in this thread:

Subject: 6. What do Fuel Octane ratings really indicate?

Thanks Waltman. With the possibility of someone like you staring at me across the table, I think I'll take a pass on the LA Busas' invitation to drop by.

BJ yes when I go the the Caribbean or a friend comes back from there who's willing bootleg for me, I pick up almost any brand I want in 150 or 180 proof. In Canada 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume) is the legal limit.

So BJ...what's your decision? Are you going to keep the Busa or the wife? I know what I'd do.
