Through both rings, split rings return between them and cinch tight/snug. Snap loose strap end to ring.![]()
I strap it depending on how I feel (slip knot, bowline, etc). Since we're talking about helmets, here's how I wear mine.

I use one of these. When I don't it goes through both and back through one like everyone else has said. I didn't think there was another way.I grew tired of having my chin strap too tight or too loose. So I purchased the quick release buckle widget thing. Works real well and I don't have to worry about how to "correctly" affix my helmet to my head.
