the white residue is the oxidized aluminum from the alcohol (same as rust).. nasty nasty stuff...On the smaller scale of things...I have a 2nd season old chain saw that would not run after sitting for 2 months during the Summer.
They rebuilt the carb under warranty and blamed the ethanol for the issue, they said the gas evaporated out leaving the white residue on the diaphram from the ethanol which caused the issue.
They suggested to always run higher octane fuel, advising this will not solve future issues but it will not be as bad of an issue.
I learned this lesson the hard way... Hiborn injector on the drag boat and I had to "make" some 'AN' fittings.. 'AN' fittings are "anodized" lots of pretty colors...
well let me warn you, it is not just for looks...(I never knew any better)
where I had drilled and ramped the internal passages, the fuel (pure methanol) had oxidized the now "raw" aluminum.. that stuff made it clear back to the fuel tank and plugged the filters, and polluted the entire system.. Motor leaned out at about 8500 rpm in the lights and vaporized a set of pistons.. was not pretty... could not return for next round either so throw away a race too....
that one or two inches of "un anodized" fuel system probably created 3 or 4 ounces (by volume) of that white powder.... every thing went in for "hard anodize" after that little screwup...
