How much is a billion dollars, and why does anyone need multiple billions?

This post opens up a whole new argument that seems somewhat out of sinc with the evolution of this conversation. That's only my opinion. As to the merits of your argument, you slam out many generalizations as though it is gospel. Do you know how much infrastructure funding has been voted down by Republican city councils, county commissioners and state leglislators throughout this country since year 2000? You blame lame teachers for low performance in schools? I am a high school teacher homeboy, and you haven't a clue on that very complex issue. Read up on this stuff and I'll gladly return to this debate.

sorry, I thought you brought up the Wisc. Governor, and Unions.....

in the real world, when you produce an inferior product...you get fired.

In the Public Employee Union world, when the kids can't read, and the roads are filled with potholes....you demand a raise, and get it.

Doyle I will ask this question again... What is a fair salary for a teacher, firefighter or police officer... If I gave you the magic wand to make it happen what would that number be.. You can't make anymore statements about fairness, lets just say it is all in your court, you can't compare you just have to throw out there what you think the number should be...

What is that number?

WOW.......... just saw a guy I do contract work for on that Forbes list. I knew he was well off, but a billionaire?? Guess the private runway behind the office should have been a dead giveaway:laugh:

You are asking me to name a salary for a peace officer or teacher, geeze Doug, there are too many variables from position to position. For example, a patrol officer vrs a special weapons team officer vrs a custody officer, how can that fairly be answered?
You want me to play anyway, OK, I am a teacher, licenced in 3 states, have two masters degrees and 24 years experience and labeled HQ (highly qualified). I make $57k a year, have not gotten a raise in 4 years, pay reduction this year and a much bigger one next year, I am not complaining at all, just giving you a baseline. Most of my friends with equal education in the private sector are six figure folks with major nest eggs.

I just read your question again so let me add additional info....I believe police, fire and teacher salaries are equitible right now in most areas of the country, I don't understand where you're going with this, no one is striking or demanding higher wages that I know of, the upset in Wisconson is over the right to collective bargain.

BTW, if someone is NOT a government employee and is upset about the benefits, why don't they get a municipal, county, state or federal job? (remember earlier in this conversation when you stated something like, "if someone wants to make more money, why don't they start a company or be a CEO?")

great so now we have something to work with....

lets just break it down to teachers then, I think it was unfair too...

what should a first year teacher make? I have done a little research on my own and it appears that there is a definate breakdown based on age of kids...

but you choose to be a teacher, not work in the private sector.

No Mr. Afterhours, in my real world, people shoot at me and I chase rape suspects down alleys in the inner city.
I demand a raise and I get it? That is serious fiction, and most of your potholes are the result of PRIVATE sector construction companies that contract with municipalities and do an inferior job. Examples are all over this country, 3 big road construction nightmares going on right now, done by private companies right here in Reno.

I've never even heard of pay based on age of students, starting pay in Reno (Bachelor's degree, 5th year student teaching and NV teaching licence) is about $32k. Currently, all advancement is frozen.

where I live, potholes are filled by city workers....well actually they aren't filled but they are supposed to be.

If you city/municipality is contracting out, fine....its still gov. workers, probably getting kick backs that are making bad choices.

PS: 32,000 for 9 months of work is $3500.00 per month.....would actually be approx. $42k if they actually worked 12 months a year.

I don't know about Reno, but here teachers work year round. When school is out they are required to take classes and other stuff.

what should your compensation have been as a leo?

All my teacher friends travel in the summer....so maybe things are different in different school districts.

Here, you get your initial liscense to teach. After that you have to get certifications, speciality liscenses and some type of level credentials to get pay raises or move up. It doesn't take up the whole summer, but an ambitious teacher will only have a week off here and there during the summer.

So, what is the central theme here, that teachers are overpaid? I get calls, texts and e mails 24/7. I council abused kids. I break up fights, I jump start kids cars, I correct papers instead of watching Moto GP with friends, I attend after hours meetings and I take the blame for a kid's failure even though it was because mom is a prostitute and dad is in prison. Last year I helped coroners deputies and police remove a 17 year old from his pick up truck (his head was blown off from handgun sucicide)in the school parking lot.
Don't effin tell me I don't earn my salary as a teacher. A proud teacher, and I don't care who the hell says what about "overpaid civil servants", I only have to answer to myself as to the level of teachers'(including myself) contributions to society.

But, lotta conservatives around here, everything should be privatized, the wealthier the better, the government sucks, any disagreement makes you a socialist, on and on.

Doyle I will thank you again for your awesome service to your community in so many roles. I am not in any way trying to say that teachers are underpaid or minimize the impact thre have each day. What I am trying to do is to get a number from a teacher of how much is enough. We know already on the far end of the scale that some think a billion is too much money and we know that 32,000 is not enough so what would be a good number. I don't want to compare to what the private sector is getting but if I told you to give me an honest number that teachers should make what would it be?
