How NOT to haze your tire~!~ Almost went down

Well, haven't gotten out for a spin yet...will tonight.

Oil filter had me a bit nervous also, took it back off and replaced it...again. Went back and lock tighted the oil line on the side.

3 oil drains in 2 days, but want to make absolutely sure it's right~!~

this happnd to me the first oil change i did. luckily i sprayed oil out just after i started it. in your situation i dont think my luck woulda been as good.

Great save! Most of us would've probably gone down.

But, cleaning the oil filter area prior to install, and then testing the bike for oil leaks after the install (i.e. idling and looking under) are two very mundane things which would prevent the whole issue, but would rob you of the thrill that you experienced. :poke:

Now, I've done worse than that, so this will be another reminder to me to take my time and not to rush things when working on a bike. :rulez:

I would have to agree...must clean and inspect the filter area prior to placing the new filter on. Was obviously missed on this oil change.

I do a visual leak test every time and also did in this scenario. It did not leak while warming up, nor for the first 1.2 miles down the road. It only gave out once I opened up second gear a bit and put more pressure though the oil line.

Too late then~!~

I took it out for a short spin today and did another visual, looking ok.

Gotta have that "thrill of experience" to learn~!~ LoL

I think this is what makes the this oversight so very dangerous... May not leak at idle but once load is added to the engine (like on freeway ramps etc.)it sprays like a super soaker! Too late then...

Thank you so much for posting. Holy ****e, i can't believe this could happen so easily! who would have thought to look at that? I'm going out to look at my old oil filter to see if it has the gasket.

thanks,

Mythos

I always check to make sure the o-ring is on the filter, I also put some oil on the new filter o-ring.

sorry.. just read this thread- let me chime in a month after the fact!

WOW... you lucky lucky man! Glad it worked out for you... almost was a hard lesson learned.... legs tired from pushing the busa???

I know it's old, and I'm glad your OK. Your a much better rider than I am, I definetly would have wrecked there.

I just dont understand how someone would miss that?? I've only had my Busa for a month, havent done the oil yet. Is the filter somewhere you cant see? Guessing not from the picture. I'm fairly mechanical, been doing maint. on all my vehicles for a long time, I've never had this happen. I'm thinking if you wipe the old oil from where the filter goes on, you'd at least feel it? Honestly, I'm not trying to be an ass by any means, I'm just in awe how thats missed by so many people?? :confused2:

The ride situation actually worked out well...

I pushed the Busa back down the ramp and onto the side of the road. Before I could even get the kickstand down, a fella from up the road I had never met stopped and gave me a ride home to get the trailer. By the time I got back, another neighbor who races his R6 (and won his last GP race) was pulling in and helped me load her up.

You can see the filter from the lower right hand side looking through the fairing. You can not take it out though without removing at least some of the fairing bolts/push pins

Thats good to hear! Thanks for sharing that experience... could have been a very expensive oil change and will make sure I pay extra close attention when doing mine.

This is a thread worth resurrecting.

Did my first oil change on the Busa (and any bike newer than 1985 for that matter) at home. Had the manual and the help of the Org threads on the subject. Scheduled two hours to do it. Took over 4 hours before I relized that the original gasket was still on the bike and preventing a good seal. For the uninitiated, that thing does not present as an obviously removable piece. Only thing that saved me was that I couldn't get the filter tightened without the new gasket binding up and dripping oil. Otherwise, I'd probably have a similarly harrowing story to share.

Might not be a bad idea to post up a sticky about this issue since so many have made had the same problem and it has such tremendously dangerous potential.

Keep the rubberside down and keep the slick stuff INSIDE!

:beerchug:

Wow!!! Been there done that when I took my buddies gsxr 1100 out for a spin after he just had the oil change at one of our local bike shops. It felt almost as if the rear tire was flat or something, I was coming around a similar bend hot! Managed not to lose it, but the whole rear tire was covered in oil and a trail of oil all down the road. They didn't tighten in the drain plug properly:moon: Needless to say, won't be going to that shop!

I was reading this, and was thinking "this sounds familiar" then saw the pic.'s and had to look at the date.
