how to get trouble codes

I'm new here and would like to know how to get trouble codes on a gen II. FI light is on and it wont start. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks all. jumpered connector and it worked great. on mine it was the white/red wire to the blacke/white. now chasing code 42 ignition switch. no warranty, bought a wrecked one and putting it back together
