Yep, no way vice grips or any pliers should be used on those pistons.
One good groove or scrape and that piston is leaking and ruined.
I have reverse needle nose pliers that I use to grab the insides of the piston.
If that guy just had to hold them on the outside, he should have used wood or rubber to protect the piston's surface from the plier's jaws.
