I got played. Gauges looked swapped.

When I bought my hayabusa a few weeks ago the seller advertised low miles. It showed 5,380 miles and the bike did seem to be in good shape. I only thing that made me think was the key area was pretty beat up.

I was taking the nose off lastnight to prepare for the HID light I have coming and noticed on the back of the gauges that "busa" and "5,300" were written in green paint pen.

I am a little ticked off now and have no idea if I should take any action or just suck it up and ride. Is there any other way to determine actual miles?

Any thing I should check over since the bike more then likley has high miles?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

How did you buy your bike? You may want to contact the seller and see if he was the first owner; he may not have known that there was a switch... keep in mind, it may not have been with intent to decieve... remember that many people have blue guages and maybe he swapped the gauges to keep them, or he had a mirrors windscreen and the gauge plastic melted...

Unfortunately, without the odometer it would be pretty much impossible to determine actual miles... might come close by looking at maintenance records... might not tell you miles, but you'll know approximately by what has been done.

I would look at the title and see if the milage is different there.

Yeah it was a private seller and he was the original owner. The title had states "new" under miles. I have his email address and sent him a friendly email to start. Hopefully, he replies with something.

I have to get a new gauge cluster for my busa because of an accident two weeks ago. If I go with a new one, Ill need to send it off to someone and have the proper milage set on it. I would think if there was an intent to lower the milage the guy would have to be a real dumbazz to leave the writing on the back. Hope he responds to your email with some explanation though.

I think all you have to do is declare the additional miles on the DMV form when you sell it.

Yep - that is why I asked what the title stated for milage

Lawyer up... If he didn't tell you or update his mileage on his registration he is trying to beat you. Or he is just an idiot. Stupid doesn't mean you can mislead people and suffer no penalty. If he says he had the new cluster updated to the old ask for the old one to verify if he has it... I don't think there is a way to confirm miles in a situation like this unless he was putting the accurate milage on his registration which I believe should be transferred to the title?

He could have had a new one put on as well and had the actual mileage correctly put on his new cluster and what you see written is the note of the mileage.

Hopefully he ponies up and gives you the required info.

Maintenance records will shed some light on the mileage.

Sorry to hear about your grief.
Here in Ontario a private seller is required to obtain a sales package from the MTO and has to present it to any buyer interested in the bike. This document is meant to protect both parties and states the age of the bike, VIN number, the current owner as well as EVERY owner since new with their location in Ontario along with mileage when the ownership was transferred in any previous sales as well as any accident history that was claimed through insurance.

The package only costs 20 bucks and offers piece of mind when dropping down a good sized chunk of cash for a bike. You get a complete history of the bike since new and you have the option of contacting previous owners if needed.

The one thing we have to watch out for in Ontario is a bike that was bought by a dealer of taken in on trade and not sold soon afterwards. Chances are they have personally logged up quite a few miles without much or any maintenance at all and then sold it off as a newly traded bike.

Dealers don't have to present the sellers package as they are registered with the Ontario gov't to sell cars and have to meet a certain standard. We have always purchased a sellers/buyers package anyway when purchasing a used car from a dealer and have found many things that the dealers were hiding just because they didn't ahve to present the sellers/buyers package. SNAKES!!

This is common with automobiles up here but due to the sellers/buyers package we have caught a few independent used car dealers practicing this on a regular basis, sometimes driving the car for a year or more with no maintenance.

Bottom line is for a twenty dollar investment you get some protection and start off as an educated consumer. You can always walk away from a deal and keep looking for the right Busa.

Good luck and check out the previous owners story and threaten legal action if you needed.

Does your state require yearly safety inspection. If so the miles at the last inspection should be recorded.

is there a computer on board like in cars? i know on a car you could tap in and check mileage in he computer....

May be a updated gauge cluster with miles set
to orignial, have to do mine to replace melted gauges

Isn't it a Federal crime to intentionally misrepresent mileage? Says so on my CA title. I'd talk to a lawyer if the seller isn't clean. Look for unexpected wear on shifter, footpegs, brake levers, etc, that indicate higher mileage than he said. And start a paper trail between you and the seller for that eventual court date...
