I need a cheap tire changer machine

I finally broke down and bought a no-mar when the local shop went to $20 to change and $12 to balance per tire off the bike.
64 a set.. ouch

No-mar is not cheap, but it is sweet!

I balance the rear naked, no cush drive/sprocket

yea im thinkin once i get all my stuff worked out and save up ima get a no mar even tho it aint cheap seems like in the long run it is better for price

i know in the automotive world they get 0.2 (2 tenths ) per tire mount and balance and that includes racking the car up and r&r the tire and any hubcaps, wheel locks ,etc.. thats $16 and 12 minutes so were do they get these crazy prices for bike tires off the bike??? if you bought there overpriced tire they would mount it for free probably, why is the first thing they ask is where did you get the tire?? what the hell doe`s that matter or why doe`s it have anything to do with how long it takes to mount?? my neighboor was charged $67 for 1 rear tire mount and balance from clinton cycle in camp springs,md !!! fn crooks.

maybe if some off these shops would stop robbing people and do fair work/parts for a fair price they wouldn`t have the internet to blame for lack of parts sales/business?? then you could make a fair profit on alot of bikes instead of trying to make it all on a few bikes?? IMHO
You don't make money selling bikes...Suzuki gives you almost no margin, and when competing with big-box multi line dealers selling bikes at cost, you make none. I don't charge dealer prep/destination/delivery fees. All of your money in a dealership is made on parts/accessories and labor. Like I said earlier, I charge $20 (off the bike) to balance. I WOULD LIKE to charge those who buy their tires off the internet from mail-order businesses that have no shop overhead and that drop ship everything, MORE, just because they are taking away my livelihood...but I don't. I get nothing but a$$holes in my shop ALL DAY LONG who buy a bike at cost from me and then ask for 50% off (or freebies) on all their accessories.

I'm curious now....How often do the NON-TRACK members need to change tires. It would take a while to recover the cost of a good quality changer and balancer, right?

Do you or any other bike dealership show the invoice next to the sales price??? Not saying you don't but I've never seen any that do, SO HOW ARE WE (the customer) SUPPOSED TO KNOW HOW MUCH YOU'RE ALLEDGEDLY NOT MAKING ON A SALE???

one set of tires and I have got most of my money back...

Local store prices on Pilot Road 2s - $400ish
Install on tires that I bought from them after removing the rims myself - $80
By the time I figure gas to get there and back and taxes and what not it is $500+

Now that I do it myself...
Harbor Freight changer - $80
Good static balancer - $160 (you can spend less)
Pilot Road 2s online - $290 shipped
Total is $530
and I save almost $200 a change from here on out ($100 on tires and $80 on install)

Add the fact that I've got two bikes in the garage, and my father and brother-in-law have bikes within 30 minutes....It was a no-brainer.

It all comes down to what your time is worth. For $20 I'd gladly let someone else do it. For $30 I would; for $50, eh.....

And I agree the dealer needs to make some fair $ and I have no problem supporting them.

Sore subject...I just went to have a punctured tire pulled off my valk rear rim. I considered trying to pull it off myself. Anyway I had the rim in hand and I was quoted 5 or 10 bucks on the phone. (Honda of north Fl. on Atlantic Blvd said free on Monday- but I was in a hurry.)

I get to another dealership on Blanding and I got robbed. The price went up to $22.50 & the rim now has two scratches. And they were going to do the job while I waited-WRONG. I talked to the  manager, he makes a call to service and he says go back to the service department and get another ticket and we will refund half back. So I walk back in the rain to service and the service jerk (now mr atitude) says I dont what your talking about...And the blankey blankety blank tire is STILL not off the rim.

So I say I've had enough! I call the manger on my cell phone from car and I said you keep your 22.50, cause I need tires and Guess what? I'm NOT buying them from you. You will be out many times that amount from lost service and parts on my three bikes. I said "hell will freeze over and the little devils will be ice skating before I ever come back to your dealership".

I'd gladly pay $22.50 per tire but none-the-less I understand why you're mad.

Ok. The way I would calculate is not including a price for tires, that's irrelevant. The changer and balancer are $240 by your example. If you use $40 a tire for mounting, again your example of $80, that will be a payoff after 6 tires. Two tires a year (example), that's a 3 year payback. Not very good.

Of course, start adding additional bikes and family members with bikes, then the numbers look better if everyone contributes $$$ to the purchase of the equipment. I have multiple bikes too but prefer to have others do certain maintenace/repairs on my rides.

p.s., what balancer do you have? Definately worth looking into if multiple users are contributing....

How is the price of the tire irrelevant? If you don't buy the tires at a dealership the generally won't install the tires around here, and if they will it is like $120. For me it is relevant.

I am still waiting for it to show up, and I think the guy only has 1 or 2 left and may not be making anymore due to health reasons....but I ordered one of these http://www.pbase.com/rodneff/2axis_adj_balancer
It has some features that other units don't have and even though I may never need the features, I like knowing I have them.

You can get a balancer from no-mar for $99 i think.

For me I like to be the one who does the work on my bike. I may take longer, but I know it will get done the way I like it, and I like to get my hands dirty. My time is free to me and I enjoy spending it in the garage.

Honestly, it's really none of your business what the invoice is...BUT...if the customer comes in and I tell him that the discussed selling price is at cost or under, I will pull my invoice and show him. Also, most of you guys have no idea about additional costs incurred, such as flooring. What pisses me off is that you would NEVER think of doing this to any other business and it makes me sick. Would you go into your local Home Depot and ask them to show you their invoice on a Skil saw so you know how much profit they are making? Or your local Foot Locker on a pair of Nikes? Best Buy on a HP laptop? No...not gonna happen. I get these cheap motherfukkers in all day long that will grind me on a $25 visor for their helmet...I tell 'em to try that at McDonald's on a Big Mac and see how that works out for them.

Man,.....after reading this post,.....I'm glad I purchased an older Accu-turn air powered tire changer from one of the reps. The machine was around $3500 new,....but I picked it up for $500. It had a couple little issues that cost less than $25 to repair. I purchased this machine 5 years ago,.........and have offered mount and balance for fellow bikers at a $10 fee per wheel. The machine paid for itself in less than 2 years.

My advise would be to watch local ads for shops that are closing,.....used equipment sales, etc. You can find some great deals. They might not fall in your lap,.........you will have to do some homework.

On the static balancers,..........Marc Parnes makes an excellent one at a very reasonable price. I, too, remove the cush-drive from the rear wheel while balancing.

I have balanced rear tires both with and without the cush drive and sprocket. I found that I can get a more accurate balance with the complete wheel assembly put together.

I have a Harbor Freight tire changer. I have changed tires on 4 bikes so far. That's 8 wheels. My local shop wanted $30 a wheel for mount, and $15 for balance, after I bought the tires from them.

I have a Harbor Freight changer. Takes about 15-20 minutes. The balance is sold separately.

Customers ask me for discounts on stands all the time and then don't order when I tell them I'm sticking to m.s.r.p but I still wouldn't feel right calling them "cheap motherfukkers" on a public board. As odd as this may sound I was fortunate enough a few years ago to nearly go out of business more than once. Why fortunate? Getting only 1 or maybe 2 customers a day teaches you to really appreciate them all: the cheapies, the brokies, and of course the richies.

having been a shop owner (automotive) for a good many years, I really cringe when they shot me the $35 a tire off the bike.. I was like WTF, you guys wearing masks or carrying guns? $35!!! yea right...

I went to harbor freight, spent $80 and then called No-Mar and bought the "no mar bar"...

Now this is certainly not a "production" machine but if you are doing a tire a week, it is MORE than satisfactory.. I can dismount/mount a new tire in about 3 minutes after the thing is off the bike..

I believe any shop doing work should be paid a fair price for work done, but $70 for 10 minutes work is a bit over the top for work that can be done by a chimpanzee on the equipment available to a commercial shop..

Looks like you should start making tire changers. Looks like it would sell well with your front and rear stands.

Lol...first of all, you're absolutely right about the fact that no one does this at a retail store such as (your examples) Mcdonalds, Home Depot, etc., but before you say that you need to think about why we (consumers) don't do that. IT'S NOT A MAJOR PURCHASE!. How many major purchases do YOU make without negotiating? Did you pay sticker for your last car/truck/SUV? Did you pay full asking price and closing costs for your last house? Did you pay full asking price and closing costs for your business location? I'd certainly hope not. I don't know of anyone above the level of an idiot that would walk into a major purchase and not at least try to negotiate a better price.

Secondly, most dealerships are privately owned which means they have flexibility on just about anything. People know that and they also know that most are willing to come off of a few bucks to make the sell.

Thirdly, if someone wants to tell me about how much they're not making or even losing on a deal and that that's why they can't lower the price, I wanna see the proof. If they're not willing to show then that tells me I don't need to do business with them. (I understand that was said in your previous post)

Why am I so angry about how dealerships treat people? Happened to me several times with car tires. I have not a rare, but a slightly uncommon tire size and people want to murder me with the prices when I find some locally. I can order the same product from Tire Rack shipped for nearly $35 less per tire ($140+tax)! Not to mention the fact that I would have still had to pay the same place to mount and balance them. If I'm going to pay the same price to have them mounted and balanced, I might as well at least get the tires cheaper. Just my
