I NEED HELP!

Pretty much what everybody else is saying.

Be consistent. This means you and your wife. Make sure both of you are doing the SAME things.

Give it time. My German Shepherd only took a day and 1/2 to become crate trained. Then he loved his crate, it was his. BUT, he was 8 weeks when I got him. Your is 6 months, it is going to take a LOT longer for your dog to unlearn bad habits.

Learn your breed. Every Great Dane I have known seem to be potty trained from birth and they can hold it forever. It just seems to be in their nature. My shepherd is intent on doing what I want, he needs a job to do. Turning potty training into a task was best for him. Learn about maltesses. Especially from people who own them. Ignore people that only have positive things to say about their breed. Talk to people who will tell you the good and the bad.

Maltesse.... Are those even dogs

I crate trained both my boxers at the same time. Make sure you limit the space so they see it only as a bed not a play room.

Stick with it...if he is 6 months now he has probably missed some good training that you are now doing.

You can always call "The Dog Whisperer"

Best of luck

when my dogs were pups I found that a well placed old ticking clock works well(just make sure the alarm is off).the pups think its mommas heart & they sleep all night without interuption.

I'm about to get a dog. There is a bunch of good info in here. My brother had a Great Dane that I dearly loved. I want one. That was the most emotional dog I've ever seen. Good luck with the young'n.

You'll find research says that the Maltese is one of the most difficult breeds to housebreak. Ours is 4 yrs old and I borderline hate this darn dog. He has a doggy door yet about once a week he decides he's too lazy and goes all over my hardwood floors. Ticks me off.

Fortunately for him the wife loves him and I have my german shepherd to keep me busy.

After this I won't have another maltese.

Maltese = $40 every 2 wks for grooming.
GSD = garden hose.

Oh, did I mention the maltese is epileptic? He's on more drugs than I can count and if he doesn't eat his pills, well, that's it, seizure time. Nothing like a little white dog flipping onto his back and pizzing into the air all over the place, no matter where he is.

Had dogs all my life. Never one like this tho.

So heres the update:
The crate worked great he held his wizz and poop until i took him out but he did still cry all night but now theres another problem

My wife took him to the vet to get the first free check up and they found ear mites which isnt a big deal, they also asked for a stool sample so she took them one yesterday and they just called this morning and told her that he has two parasites which are treatable but can be passed on to humans and deffinately to are two persian cats, so know my wife is uncomfortable keeping him considering the problems so she wants to return him before it becomes a nightmare. What really sucks is that this 245lb, tattoo having, tuff guy has fallen for the lil bugger. If he goes back no more animals for me. the wifes enough.

I just wonder what there policy is since we just picked him up on sat.

Treat him and have the cats checked...don't like your fingers thinking "hey, Old Bay, mmmmmmmmmmm..." only to find out it wasn't

I'd keep him...he needs a good home

Trust me on this one. Cesar Malon says a good dog is a tired dog and he is right. I find dogs to be more trainable and less noisey when they're tired. I bet if you got him good and tired all he would want to do is sleep in his crate. I have a 80lb pitt that is a rocket. He demands full attention all of the time. When I had enough I work him out till I know he's spent. Once back inside the house he is knocked out. Walking and excersize is the key.

Keep him. You'll be saving a life. You don't know what's going to happen to him if you return him. Keep him.

Who is going to train who? Put him on a schedule and keep him on it. Sorry but you just have to let him wine until he quits. Also when you let him out to potty DON'T play with him until he potties. Too many things just set up confusion in his little dog mind. Years ago I had Samoyed's and a Malamute. No more head strong stubborn dog has ever lived. They make my Rotties look like model citizens!
Good Luck, and be strong.

You like him.. the training is going in the right directions. All his problems are treatable. He'll be a good dog.

And if he is that bad off now... what will happen to him if you take him back to where you got him from??

He's better off with you

With a dane.. you will never ever have to raise your voice to it. Just giving the evil eye sends mine to his crate faster than you can say "crate".

But be prepared for constant attention seeking. We nicknamed ours "Velcro". You'll find out why.

Even if the parasites are transmitted, its treatable. It doesn't seem like a good reason to me to take him back.

That is exactly why I want one. I'm trying to find a reputable breeder here in KS now. And to the above, dogs are just like kids. You took responsibility for the dog. They get sick. Get the dog treated and buy it a leather jacket and sunglasses. No worries. It will be your buddy for life.

You gotta keep him Bro! You already saved him from who knows what, now don't give up on em just because he has some parasites.

Have you tried putting a stuffed dog in his crate with him so he won't feel so isolated and alone?

WE ARE DEFFINATELY KEEPING HIM, THANKS EVERYONE FOR THE HELP. HES DEFFINATELY GETTING BETTER WITH HIS TRAINING

The health problems you discribe are common with dogs you get from pet shops and puppy mills. They need to be addressed, but not bad enough to give up on the pup. Taking care of a dog is more than giving them food and water. Vet visits happen, and just like kids, somtimes you need to treat them for ailments. You wouldnt get rid of your kid if they got, for example, head lice at school would you? Treat the dog for the problem, continue the training, and give him lots of love
