I've got a Whister Galileo that pretty much blows away all the over priced and over hyped Garmin models. Best of all you can pick up new Galileo 100's with upgrade pack for under $100 bucks on ebay all day long...that's the same price as the botton of the line Garmin eTrex which pretty much does absolutely nothing.
The screen is about the same size as the top of the line Garmin models. North America base maps are built in. It comes with a 32 meg memory card to store all your street level detailed maps and those are loaded through the included USB cable (how many Garmin models boast that kind of memory?). I have several states worth of info stored in mine and still have room left in memory. The map CD's are included with the unit and have streets for neighborhoods in my area that are so new they are still under construction. The unit is water proof, has a backlit screen and will go for 8 to 10 hours straight on rechargable batteries (with light off).
I can search for cities, streets or any points of interest. I can bring up a menu for restaurants, gas stations, hotels, hospitals ect. within a specified amount of miles and it will show where they are along with the establishments phone number. Pull into a BurgerKing parking lot and BurgerKing comes up on the display.
Of course it does all the basic stuff like routes, recordable bread crumbs, mileage and speed. Only complaint I have is that it doesn't save a "top speed" log, although I haven't checked to see if it will do that in bread crumb mode.
Walmart also sells this model as a stand alone unit with the map software separate. The complete setup would run $150 from Walmart.
Either way check out all the other models of GPS systems out there besides Garmin. There are some great units out there at reasonable prices which INCLUDE the map software.
