I want to emigrate

Early days about thinking about this. This is something me and my wife have thought about several times over the last 5 years.

I'm 34 now, have 2 boys (8 and 4). We want to emigrate, because:

- Cost of living in the UK is high. I earn about £60k.
- Mortgage is about £1100 p/month
- Bike and car insurance is £1500 p/annum (all in)
- Petrol is £4 p/gallon

These aren't the main reasons, but just to give an idea of cost of living.

We want to improve our standard of living, not just about money, but what to do at the weekend, such as:

- skiing
- quadding
- wide open spaces to mess about
- biking

These may seem a bit shallow, but I'd rather do something fun with my time rather than spend every Saturday down at B&Q (big hardware store), buying bits for the garden etc.

Likewise, want to create opportunity for my children, both for now and in the future when it comes to looking for work.

I've travelled to Utah, California, Nevada, not sure if I'd want to live in any of these States, we haven't got to the stage of thinking that deeply about it, though we're getting quite serious about it now.

This of course leads to various problems - whether or not we could get a visa to do it, work permit etc., whether or not you'd have us.

But you know... looking at all your posts, particularly your rides out, your adventures, your pics, it honestly looks great. Sure, the grass isn't always greener, but I think you have a great place to live, a great standard of living, and plenty of opportunity.

Sorry, this was a bit long, but please let me know what you think, and tell me what places we should visit to look at potentially settling down. If we were to do it, we'd probably look at renting for a year or so to be sure we don't change our minds and head back to the UK.

You said it right when you talked about opportunity, it's there and all you have to do is make use of it. One of the great things about this country is that even if you live in a place like Florida with no mountains, you can travel freely and inexpensively to anywhere you want and do anything you want. It's a great country. North Georgia, Tenn, North Carolina, are a short day's drive away, the beach is nearby, (although I can't stand going to the beach). This country has something for everyone, all that's asked it that you be a productive member of society.

IRAQ is wide open. Property is cheap. Come to the States....join the Marine Corps and you can live in IRAQ for free.

alaska= all of your intrests for fun and the money is great, no state or sales tax, after2 years you get payed to live there. ppl are pretty cool for the most part, i loved every year there.

kinda depends on what you do for a living too.... certain areas around the country are better for different jobs and pay ranges vary a fair amount too

I'm in data networks - Cisco kit - eigrp, ospf, bgp etc. Along with Bay and Nortel. LAN, WAN, MAN. Degree in computer science and vendor certifications.

Project engineering, 3rd line support, design, installation for large financial organisations.

My wife and I are hoping to spend a 2-3 weeks travelling about to try and get a feel of where we'd like to try and live.

I'd then probably move over first to settle into a job before bringing the family over, it'll also give us a chance to settle our affairs in the UK, selling our house etc.
