Illinois State police must release names!!!!

The Nazi reference does not work.....because the State already has a list of registered gun owners. This just says that they must release it for public knowledge.

The state has a list of all approved to own a gun not who owns what and how many.
The article says they simply want to release the names of those who hold the card allowing them to own.

eh, if I gotta have a card that says I can own a gun I don't think I'd be happy about it, seems like the 2nd amendment is getting dirty there. I agree to security/background checks and I agree having to have a Concealed Carry Permit but it all sorta seems like the government and/or media are encroaching on personal freedoms/liberties having to have a card to own.

IF this information is available via the freedom of information act then its just a pretty crappy judgment call to print everyone's names and to be sure it had best be *everyone* if its anyone or the media storm will be even bigger. If this is new legislation that exposes previously "hidden" data, the legislative group/party should be shot for exposing people to possible issues. There are certain things people should be able to do legally but also privately. Would you want your prescription drug list or marital aid purchases  published as well?

exactly....

the list already exhists the gov. is not making a new one.

can someone please explain why you fear your gun ownership status being public...I don't get it.

Most gun owners feel it's telling the criminals who/where to come and try to get guns from. Contrary to popular belief, most gun owners don't want the general public to know what they have (invasion of personal privacy), ESPECIALLY if it's in their own home (not CCW). I don't want anyone to know I've got a gun, until after I've had to blow a hole clean thru them for attempting to harm me or my family....

I actually wrote a letter to the editor when it happened here years ago (published all CCW holders), stating it was totally irresponsbile for printing the names/addresses; just because you have a right to do something, doesn't mean you should. My ending was something to the effect that it might give criminals a pause to think that some of us are not as helpless as we may appear to be....

Well first a list or any list is one step closer to confiscation and would make that alot easier.
But mostly it's because it's not anyones business.

I get the privacy part....I don't agree with it, but that a personal thing.

I thought that one of the deterants of crime was fear of gun ownership. that is what is repeated over and over by pro-gun groups.

so why would a thief, break into your home knowing he may be shot....when he could break into your neighbors home, the guy without a gun and not be risking his life?
