I'm not a Touring Guy

My gosh the original post is exactly where my head is right now. I bought the ST1300 planning to tour, and all I want to do is tear up twisties on the Tuono & Busa. The ST actually does pretty well handling wise but what's the point? I might start to use it when I retire. I have to admit that I doubt it.
I’ve considered the ST as well always have liked those. I used to ride a ST 1100 back in the 90s

About 5 years ago when I decided I needed to sell my bike, I bought an older corvette thinking that it would help fill the void of not having a bike, I’d still have a toy and that I’d perhaps build a mild street setup for it, but very quickly I realized that it wasn’t going to fill the void at all and that was that lol. Nothing does for me like being on two wheels, EXCEPT drag racing cars but I’m retired and staying that way unless I hit the lottery.
I agree, nothing can fill the void that not having a bike creates, but I'm not interested in the type of riding that a Goldwing is designed for and excels at.

Here's a story from our local mag. He rode 8800kms for his 80th birthday to have a "cup of tea" with his son..

Great story!!!
5,000 + Miles on a DR650 wandering closer to off-road is more along my lines of touring. Doing the Trans America Trail on a bike a bit lighter than a DR650 remains my best enjoyable ride ever.

So here is an apology to Arch who started this thread and all the heavy touring bike riders in advance. Please forgive me for being different and speaking my mind.

I just came back from doing a 80 mile ride on a bike weighing a few ounces more than 15lbs, and while listening to Shifty Shift and Pelosi decided to rather spend quality time on the .Org.

I can’t imagine riding a bike which is heavier than the Busa. The only reason I forgive the Busa for being so heavy is it’s ability to reach almost 200mph while remaining comfortable.

A Gold Wing, or a boat anchor (big Harley) is a car on two wheels. Don’t even get me going on those stupid three wheelers. There is no fun in that, no skill, no adrenaline rush. Might as well buy a Mazda Miata.

Before I get fried, remember I apologized in advance.:moon:

Well, I meant a long trip, like 8 states in 10 days, somewhere around 3-4,000 miles or 6 states in 7 days, around 3,000 miles. CA, NV, ID, WY, MT, OR, or CA, OR, ID, MT, WA, OR, 3CA. Something like that. What you mentioned is really just a couple of day trips with a stay over, not touring.
in the last 35 years I have not had more than a weekend plus 2 days off except twice. one when I got married and the second when I died in the hospital. After a few days I want to work. I get irritable and frustrated. That makes long bike rides fun for exactly 4 days. After that I'm done. we went to the dragon for 5 days and by day 4 I was scraping rocks off the mountain I was riding so aggressively. I just can't get into that chill out mode for long.

I like touring, and going fast. Fyi Apex 6 wheels took some getting used to.
No more muscling the bird around.
389 miles today all back roads and in Ozark Mountains. I'm not tired

This is my uncle's 05 GW. Absolutely a blast to ride. I was a little iffy on riding such a big bike but it handles so well and is very comfortable. This is the generation I want. The new ones are very nice but still out of my price range. That's my dad's Can Am in the background. I'd be okay with it too.

Power with this generation is 167hp and 123tq out of 1800cc.
My aunt’s husband had an ‘05 and his uncle bought and ‘07 after retiring so they could go on some cross country trips. Once the uncle had seen/been to the places he wanted, my aunt’s husband bought the ‘07 and sold the ‘05. He then experienced a transmission failure and was out of warranty due to age. He ended up spending a couple of thousand dollars to repair it. That’s the only GW rider that I personally know to have had mechanical issues. I’ve always liked them myself and wouldn’t mind having one, but the weight scares me. Even my Councours14 I find too heavy at times. I guess at least the GW has reverse. Lol!

The weight intimidated me at first but I found it very easy to maneuver around. Considering it is maybe a couple hundred pounds heavier than your 14, youd probably find the same thing I found in it. A lot to be said for the comfort in one.

Isn’t your “aunt’s husband“ your...uncle?:D

Arch you gotta at least take 1 trip on that Bimmer.... Do an Iron Butt or something!!! Need to let that machine stretch it’s legs so 2 speak. Pick a spot on the map 2 days away you’ve always wanted 2 see and just do it!!! :beerchug:

I won't say I would not do it, it's just not my main riding. I have done several weekenders on the BMW. I had a great trip to Virginia Tech, which is 6 hours away plus a day on the Back of the Dragon, about 1,000 miles in 3 days. I was on roads so sparsely traveled even the cows notice when you roll by. Good times. So we may do that Iron Butt still @1busa!

Just hit me up @fallenarch and I’ll swing thru VA and link up :beerchug: I think you just need to get a couple long rides under your belt and you’ll warm up to the whole touring experience. Doesn’t have to be an Iron Butt if you don’t want to feel pressured to ride a certain distance.

But I must say there is something about being in the saddle 12+ hours just riding towards a destination. For me it’s kinda like this Zen like state..... Just you and the unknown road that lies ahead. It’s night and day compared to sitting in a cage for that long.
