DAMN I got to be the dumbest s.o.b in this newsgroup!!! I put down my kickstand and the damn thing slid back and dropped my beautiful y2k silvernblue BUSABABY!!! HOW BOUT ALL THE DAMN SCRATCHES IN MY PLASTIC!! So I have been compounding and waxing/helped some but not enuff!!! any tips on repair/stronger kickstand?/ ps you guys r great!! back to the garage fer now.

Not to tick you off cause I would be pissed too if I dropped my new baby, but I am quite happy with my sidestand. It is pretty sturdy as far as I am concerned. You can buy an optional centerstand for the bike from Suzuki.

I want to get rid of it because when extended it leans the bike over too far and does not extend far enough in front of the bike to be secure and furthermore when retracted it sticks out too far. I like the stand on the R1, sits the bike way more upright and tucks in cleanly against the swingarm when retracted. What does sherm have to remedy this?

Cellphoney, you are not alone. Since this forum started there have been about a dozen reports of busas falling off their sidestands and getting damaged. I had about 5000 miles on mine when it happened. The problem is that the sidestand offers very little resistance to retraction when there is the a forward force on the bike - like when it is pointed even slightly down hill.
My mod ($5.00 shipping included) reduces the problem quite a bit. see www.shermworks.com/standmod.jpg and www.shermworks.com/modinst.gif

CELLPHONEY, At least you were the one who dropped your new Busa. My friend, who I allowed to ride my new Blue Busa, dropped mine on its right side. Little damage was done, but there was no damage before he dropped it. I agree, the side stand is not very good. My wife's '99 Katana 750 has a terrible side stand. It rolled off its side stand twice. Once it was caught, once it was not. I began to think Suzuki just didn't know how to make a side stand, but the side stand on the GSXR is great.

I almost dropped my Blue 00 in the first week I had it by letting it point down hill slightly on my driveway while I was waxing it. I must have rubbed too vigorously or something because it started to go and I mashed the stand back forward with my tennis shoe while I snatched at the bars to stop it from rolling. It stopped right on my toes and hurt like hell but I sure learned the same lesson. Also, if the scratches are ONLY in the paint I have found that GOOF-OFF works amazingly well in rubbing off almost anything without going all the way through the paint as easy as some rubbing compounds.

If you guys need replacement parts I can get you dealer cost plus 20%. Ends up being somewhere between 30-40% off of retail..

I feel your pain. I was idling my wife's
coppertop, waiting for it to warm up,my back
was turned while I clipped my helmet strap
when I heard that heavy plastic crunching
thump; halting my heartbeat! Big time S**K
Only one week old and I had to dish out
another grand for new plastic. The stock
sidestand cant be trusted. I ordered sherms
fix but havent received it yet

Sorry to hear it, I almost did the same thing.
Now, I just make sure it is in first gear when you turn it off. Then roll forward to compression, turn the bars, and set it down on the stand. I havn't had any troubles ever since I started doing this.

The EXACT same thing almost happened to my brand new blue/silver busa last night!! I was cleaning it in the garage. I was pushing the bike in the garage so I could clean the rims and when I sat it on the kickstand the bike was still rolling foward ever-so-slightly and it rolled right off the kickstand and started to fall. I got lucky because I was still holding the handle bars when it happened and I felt it falling and was able to stop it. The Bus's sidestand is weak. Even on flat land - if you push a Bus from the rear it'll roll right off it's kickstand and fall over. I'll just have to be more cautious when putting it on it's sidestand..my R1 didn't have this problem.

I always use a front and rear end race stand while cleaning the bike, no worries about having it fall over. Also makes it easy to keep those black metallic rims clean.

One of the first things you should learn with the bike, is to leave it in gear when shutting of the engine and getting off. It will save your *** and bike one day.

Deja vu.

341 times on this site alone.

Put in the gear, push forward, lean.

Get used it it.

Great suggestion with the decals Frank, lol!

They say misery loves company/truer words have never been spoken/ iz nice to know I was not the only person to do this!( back to the rubbin compound.)

These guys have definitely saved my a s s on this one. I hung around this board for several months before getting my Busa and read all the posts from the guys who dropped their Busas off the side stand. I said, "Not me". The best answer is Martin's suggestion, put it in first gear, roll it all the way forward until the drive chain stops it, and then put the bike weight on the stand. It is pretty much locked in position then. But most important, don't be in a hurry. Take two seconds, save a thousand bucks.

CELLPHONY

I did the same thing also , the best advice is like VegasDude said, make it a habbit of shutting the engine off with the bike in gear and putting down the side stand, also get sherms mod to help things out.

Ride Safe, Bob
