Wow, some misconceptions about the 1098.

I'll keep my '06 'Busa for two up riding (it does that extremely well), but my 1098 is absolutely amazing. I did get the full Termignoni exhaust added on but otherwise it is stock (except for the CF front fender). The bike is simply amazing. 600 handling with open class power along with cruiser torque. With equal riders aboard, *anyone* (except a beginner) will go faster on the 1098.

I'm not slow in the corners on my Hayabusa but I cannot get over how much faster the 1098 is than anything else (even the GSXR1000's I ride with).

Three things about the 1098 stand out as "sucking". The mirrors are close to useless as is the pancake they call a seat. My leathers double the amount of padding I have compared to when I ride in jeans (rare). That and the fuel mileage. The 1098 goes about 100 miles before the reserve light comes on.

For the $19k I have invested, it is by far the best value of a motorcycle I've ever bought.

Any questions?

Yeah can I have it?

(black954 @ May 28 2007,06:26) What does it matter, a GSXR 1000 will hand any liter bike it's ass. There is more to a sportbike than acceleration. And on that note, it will also hand a busa and ZX14 it's ass with average skilled riders. I like the Ducati for what it is. I believe it's much harder for a twin to reliably make similar power as an inline 4. Has anyone ridden a 1000cc twin? They are an absolute blast to ride. I may never own a Ducati, but it's ok to dream.
I understand the love of a twins torque...not a duc but..

I had plenty of fun wringing out my buds 998 Superhawk...totally different riding experience..but as you alude too in your "a gsxr will hand any bike it's azz" but then go on to explain how you'd take a 14 or a busa with an average rider?...since we all know that on the street or track it's all about the rider?..why feel the need to compensate with the italian crown jewel of twins?...imagine what you could do with the extra $8-$10 grand you'd save with a Superhawk..decked with ohlins all around...w/ plenty of cash left over for lotsa motor work...poor mans duc maybe?...still no 1098 but...and it's a big BUT...with the 998 you'd still have a wealth of stateside stocked parts and great customer service...and all on the cheap...for those of us who don't have an abundance of cash but would rather ride than dream about riding a solid twin...a "reliable" solid twin.

I know a LOT of modded bike at are not the least bit reliable. Besides, I didn't have to do any work to it besides the exhaust. Plus, your modded Jap bike doesn't turn heads like the 1098.

If you feel you have to explain WHY you own a Duc to your friends, then you should NEVER own one. Because they will NEVER understand. Of course it might mean you need NEW FRIENDS

Ducati L twins will never make the same power of an inline four; however, the Ducati V four may be a contender.

I know the New Gixxer 1K supposedly puts out more raw hp, but the 1098 has an amazing motor.  Inline 4 cyl power (even the 1K and the Hayabusa) is pretty much useless until you get to about halfway through the rev range, when it starts making the *big* pulling power. With the 1098, you can get on the gas so much earlier coming out of a corner, and actually start accelerating instead of waiting for it to gain revs. It is *much* easier to go faster on than any Jap bike. This is also according to other, much more experienced riders than myself. The sound alone is pure music to a motorhead. Not excessively loud but an impressive rumble.

Bill, turning heads is not why I bought it, but is something it does regularly wherever I go. Fact of the matter is Ducati has done their homework and got an A+. Does it have it's pro's and con's like any other bike? Of course. Come by next time you're in Atl and you can ride it.

The Ducati V four (the Desmosedici) is only $65,000 at the moment (current dollar/lira exchange rate).

cool...i know that the twins rock with torque...a totally different riding experience and like you say?...what i experience with big bore twins is a whole lot more "usable torque" and squarely placed in the areas where that beefy, wideband flatazz torque curve can be put to best use...which does make them very forgiving and easier to go fast through the tight & technicals..and i love what they have to offer especially in the mountains (while they don't do real well down here on the long, straight and ultra fast flats of florida..couple years back i was hell bent on moving to the mountains..almost had the wife convinced...and envisioned myself garaging an aprilia race as soon as i got there....as to me?....big twins are the ultimate for mountain work..he11...i could love life on a freaking SV650 up there..and some of the best riding locals i knew actually rode SV650's...SV1000 would even be a sweet and formidable mountain machine...and?...if i had the dough and time?..I'd run right up there to take ya up on the test ride offer..thanks...i appreciate that..and your probably right...the 1098 most likely is one hella machine...but i've just had to many buds with horror stories regarding the expense of parts replacement, availability of parts and one friend who's an ins. lawyer by profession who pre-paid/ordered an MH900E...finally took delivery 18 months later...then 3 months and 1,700 miles later tossed a conrod through the bottom case...ducati declined responsibility and claimed he over-reved it..he hired a pro witness mech who verified that the conrod cap nuts were never properly torqued...1 claims case trial & 20 months later?..he finally got his $22,000+ back....so?...I guess my salty tastes have me a bit prejudice against ducs..but that's just me and thanks for the offer..and?..I wish you far better luck than my buds have had...then again?..maybe ya won't need it...sounds like duc may have finally got it right with the 1098.

FYI, I was at Autobahn countryclub in Joliet, IL yesterday for a trackday with STT where there was a yellow 1098 in Intermediate group, the same group I was running. I handed it it's ass in every corner and every straightaway on my POS GSXR 600 with standard forks and regular Tokico's. If it handles like a 600, I wasn't seeing it. The guy didn't even want to talk to me after the first session cause he was embarassed/frustrated. I believe some of it had to do with the prestige of riding a Duc and being scared to wreck it, but I thought Duc owners could afford them? I wasn't even trying to talk about the session, I just wanted to ask how he liked it and what his impressions were. And for comparison, there was a 954 and R1 I had a HARD time beating cause they would fly past me on the straights. I love Ducati's, but I believe they have more "hype" than anything else.

If a 600 beat a 1098 then it's the rider --- Period ! If not, then you need to go PRO
beerchug.gif

I am a decent track rider, but at 270lbs. on a 2003 GSXR600, I would think he would smoke me. It was a 2 mile track which isn't all that small.

Sounds to me like he's new to tracks and riding ! Just like Goldwing and Harley owners, lots of people (who have the $$$ and want to impress someone or themselves) buy a Ducati as their first bike because of the name. Me, I would like an MvAgusta F 1000 to be next to the Busa, but because of the CRUMMIE dealership network, PARTS (for gaskets, I think you order them from the factory it takes sooooo long) which I don't think exist and worthless factory support. I will pass
