I work for the UN Peacekeeping Dept ! I was not there as a US Military Personnel. When I got to Freetown, the UN helicopter (MI-8) just droped me and two others off on the beach and then flew back to Guinea for safty. Infact, the people who were suppose to meet us never showed up, so we just hopped a ride in an old Toyota pickup with rebels armed with machine guns, AK 47's and RPG'S. They took us right to the hotel (if you could call it that) that we were to stay in. This was 1999 when they were still chopping hands and feet off of the locals. But before the 2001 attempt to take over the capital. It's nothing like that now and the UN is suppose to be completely out by the end of 2007 !3 Years!!!!!!!!!!!! wow. Didn't realise you lads got stationed over anywhere for that length of time... I did love my 3 years there though
Over here, they get sent for six months............ then home for six months.... then back again..
Was a Wonderful time, and if you've been there (or simular) you know what I mean. LIFE IS GOOD
