Is the Hayabusa a GSXR?

Just for the record - the insurance geeks who do the actuary tables are pretty smart guys who deal with empirical numbers. I don't think for a second a displaced R designation in the model number has anything to do with the insurers assumed risk in insuring any particular motocycle. Think about it - "a rose by any other name would smell so sweet" and "a Busa by any other name would be so fast"... I'd gladly call my B-King a Vespa if it would save a few hundred dollars a year in insurance rates.

I asked my agent about this, he told me Dairyland rates the busa at "level 56" in comparison, my 08 Harley Rocker is rated at "level 12". True story

My wording was probably misleading...I'm sure they did not put the R at the end to make insurance cheaper, however the R may have been placed at the end to classify the bike differently which in turn offers a benefit of having it insured slightly differently by "some" companies.

It more than makes up for any difference in insurance premiums in rear tire replacements

Insurance can be fooled, for a while anyway.

Case in point, the Mazda Rx-8. Some insurance companies rated it as a 2 door sports car, however most rated it as a 4 door car with a 1.3L engine. It cost less to insure than a Saturn SL1 with a 1.8L engine.

As time passes, they adjust the rating as crash numbers, avg ownership age, etc, come in.

Why didn't they call it a GSXH, as I read the invented a new name for the Busa a HYPERSPORTS.
But then again i bet the insurance company's would have had a field day with that.

Good tires (check), fuel (check), running motor (check), gear (check)

It's a Busa, her name is BB, she's all mine. A GSXR... I don't care. She's fast, sleek, and sexy. Regardless of what the side panel and case say, I love her.

I didn't read all replies, but here is my take on it.

GSX-R600, GSX-R750, and GSX-R1000 all have "R" before the number to signify to the reader that yes, this bike is a Race bike.

In case of Hayabusa, there is no need to let the reader know what this bike is for, and what it can do, and therefore there is no need to stick "R" in front of the number.

The right question to ask your friends is "What do they mean by GSXR?"
