Is this right? 3500.00 ticket

(Postal @ Jul. 02 2007,15:00) Help! The Virginia Legislature has gone nuts! That's what we get for letting a Dem in as Govenor.

P.
Yeah, and with a Republican from Texas as President our gas prices (mine) average about $3 per gallon, now..... for the cheap stuff!

if the Virginia Legislatures EXEMPTED themselves

from this? Just like most Politicians do, that is, whatever they pass that's punative does NOT APPLY to them

?
va house members/senators/gov. etc. have long be exempt from speeding tickets and such.. they didn't need to enact it now.

As long as they are "on state business" they can, and do roll.
Same here in Oklahoma

! I guess RATS are the same everywhere

(Justyntym @ Jul. 02 2007,08:04) If I lived in Va...there is no way I am stopping for a $3500 ticket.

I never ran from the police in my life...but I would flee from the Ghestapo.

That is just screwed up, lynch mob time.

That's what I was thinking. With fines that stiff, they're going to create more serial offenders running from the law than supposedly rehabilitate the existing base of drivers they're targeting.

Thank God I'm a country boy. Saving money in taxes was one consideration when I chose to relocate 5 miles across the border in WV. I just sad my home state has betrayed it's citizens' trust and made me never want to come back.

(VaBusa @ Jul. 03 2007,04:22) Got an extra room Warren? I'm kind of looking to relocate myself

Sorry Michelle,

despite my Mormon heritage, I don't think my wife would go for that.

I wrote to my local delegates and received this response:

Dear Mr. Stewart,

I did NOT support the remedial or “abuser†fee. This
was first proposed last year and it was eventually
included as part of the Transportation Compromise that
was passed this year. It is one of the reasons I
ended up voting against the transportation bill.

Despite that, there is some misinformation going
around about its provisions. While I thought it was a
bad idea, some are making it worse than it actually
is. There are two ways the “abuser fees†can be
assessed:

- Based on Demerit Points – Annual fee assessed for
having 8 or more demerit points against your license.
$100 fee for 8 points increasing by $75 with each
additional point. Points on one’s license prior to
convictions on July 1 are not counted for the demerit
based abuser fee.

- Based on Traffic Offense – Three year annual fee
based on seriousness of offense. Only applies to
certain motor vehicle-related or driving felonies and
misdemeanors. Penalizes dangerous drivers.

In one incorrect example that has been making the
rounds on the internet, it says going 15 MPH over the
speed limit would net an offender a $3,550 ticket.
Here are the facts:

- A 15 mph over ticket is a traffic ticket (you have
to be going 20 mph over for it to qualify as reckless
driving). It carries -4 points. So, the person would
need to get another one to be at -8 and then the
“demerit point-based†fee would be $100, not $3,500.
A person could take a safe driving course and get +5
points and the fee would then be ZERO.

So while I think it is a bad idea, it isn’t as bad as
some are making it out to be. But I did oppose it.

Clarification from my local delegate:

ABUSER FEE CLARIFICATION
I wanted to clarify something I said in my previous
Update concerning the driver license "abuser" fee.

In it I said you have to be going 20 mph over the
speed limit speeding to qualify as reckless driving.
While that is correct in most cases, you can also be
cited for reckless driving for exceeding 80 mph. So
on the interstate where the speed limit is 65, you
could be cited for reckless driving for going 16 to 19
mph over the speed limit as well.

I appologize if my previous email caused any
confusion.
Thanks
Mark
