Do I cruise at 65 in first gear?  You bet!!!!  How else can I can I show off the beatiful tone of the Brocks street megaphone?  Let it ROAR!  

Whether it's the actual gear or the fork, either way, she needs some TLC.

I guess I can not get my head around a gear causing a surge is all... And then a gear you are not even in ?

I would be really hesitant about tearing the transmission down at this point.. maybe just me but it does not seem to add up.. But then again I do not work on these bikes every day..

The fork makes even less sense - it's in gear or out.

I agree, put the tear-down on hold until a certain diagnosis.
