Well about an 1.5 hours ago it happened.
I was working on a regular customer's 1950 Olds, came in for a fuel leak but had been sitting so I had to get it running to find the leak.
Somebody else had tried to start it yesterday and and put the 6V battery on a charger...they did not vent it.
I opened the vents and shut off the charger and smelled the acid. I should have know better right there but ive taken bigger risks.
Well I installed my points and needed a boost, turned on the charger and adjusted the Jumper, she pulled a few sparks and BOOOOOOOOOM!! I was blinded right away with acid and I just yelled and the help came .
Luckily I was at work and had alot of help, I was litterally soaked in battery acid. My hand is bruised from a chunk of battery hitting it so hard.
I came home and rinsed out my eyes and body for 30 minutes and called Poison control to get any other information I might need to get properly cleaned up.
That was scary, ive heard stories of batterys blowing up and even worked in a shop where one blew but I was not there that day.
I might as well have blown off a few rounds off my Glock 23 with no hearing protection on because my ears are ringing bad.
Hmm, I think I will start wearing safety glasses more often. I thank God I was not hurt worse.
I am just resting my eyes for an hour and I am headed back to work.
