Not a bad shout. According to the BMW crowd their ECU only listens for knock in narrow windows on the crank angle in an effort to eliminate noise. The local dyno guy here has headphones but says he struggles to hear what is going on most of the time.

Reducing the chance of hearing something else that sounds like knock would be my guess. Where they are positioned is in the diagram. I would also guess that is how they manage knocking cylinder identification.
