Legality of Exhaust Mods

I was offered a great deal for an M4 full exhaust system, super tempted, maybe get more lean angle on the track, plus the hp gains, but also my Busa is my daily commuter. Lots of sites dedicated to exhaust mods (Moore, Brock, etc.). No way all these people are track only riders. Most mods are technically illegal for street use (noise or emissions or both). So, what's the deal?
 
violation of fed law to tamper with the "emissions system" but usually any gov entity you'd worry about only cares about the cats. even in states like california where we have to deal with this smog check bullshit, they dont make a big deal about mufflers or even the lack of them, even on cars, within reason.

meanwhile a cop really just goes by the sound to pull you over so if youre passing a cop, pull in the clutch and let it roll for a bit to keep the noise down. i myself never had a problem regarding exhaust or with mods to my bikes in general. so far just a couple speeding tickets over the years and i treat that as the price of admission.

putting on an exhaust which has no cats in it at all (as opposed to just slipons) requires it to be tuned also, see 2WDW and such for that stuff.
 
I live in CA ( San Francisco Bay Area). In the last few years I’ve had a BMW S1000rr with a full Akra exhaust and now I have a 2022 Hayabusa with a full M 4 exhaust. It’s so loud I have to wear ear plugs or I get a headache.
Never have I ever been pulled over for modified exhaust.
Out here in CA 80 MPH is the new limit before you worry about a ticket.
Weaving in and out of lanes? No problem.
The cops out here were castrated years ago and only focus on violent crime.

Which M4 exhaust do you have? I'm looking at the Tech 1, and it doesn't seem super loud.

Funny how CA has the most restrictive rules but doesn't seem to enforce them.

Yeah, if I move ahead with the M4, I was thinking of investing in the Woolich logbox with wideband O2 sensor. Of course I would also need the PAIR valve block off. And while I'm at it, probably the Sprint P08 filter and CoreMoto SS brake lines.

Do it all at once, and that should be all the mods I'll ever need :laugh:

dont get the sprint filter, get the DNA filter. the sprint just lets too much stuff get through, ran one on my R1M.
 
Even the P08? I heard the F1-85s weren't great, but thought the P08s were good to go.

like i said, ran one on my R1M, worked well enough but you could SEE the small amount of stuff that would get through it. at least with the DNA filter you'd be blocking a bit more. its what i'll run on this bike when i get it tuned.
 
Some State laws are that you cannot modify your exhaust system (pipe). You can change it out for an aftermarket exhaust, but you can't modify the aftermarket exhaust, either.

yep honestly by far the best improvement we can make is to get rid of the hose that vents the crankcase into the air box. no reason for those oil vapors and whatever else to run back around into your intake. if its so great and ohhh it wont hurt anything blahblah then why was it only done when federal law made car and bike manufacturers start doing it? i dont want that shiz running back through my engine and neither do you.

Here’s a pic of my exhaust. It was on the bike when I bought it last year so I’m not sure which one it is.
Yep the police in my area only seem to go after more serious crimes.
Drunk driving is something they look at but stuff like dark tinted windows, no front license plate, loud exhaust isn’t bothered with even though it’s technically illegal.
There have been too many cases where a motorist was pulled over for something like that , gets into a fight with the police and gets hurt. Then the PD gets sued.
