As long as the scratches don't go through the clear coat the ScratchX should work fine. As I mentioned before my tank was full of scratches now I don't have any. As far as the tank pad goes I would get one asap. If you can't get the scratches out it will cover them and prevent new ones. I paid around $15 at a local shop for mine.I have these very fine abrasions were my nuts hit the tank (yes it hurt!). Anyway, would this polish take care of that do you think? (The scratches...not my pain!)
