My first oil change

Well I want to change my own oil. I have been scared to do it but think I will give it a shot and same the cash. I have been doing searches and think I can figure it out just had a couple of questions.

Can you change it on the kick stand?

Can you get oil and filters at a regular auto parts school? Closest bike shop is 30 miles away.

If there are any other knowledge you can impart on me before I begin this journey here in a few min?

you can do it on the kickstand. It would be better if you had a rear stand. That way all the oil will come out of the pan. You only need to take the right side fairing off to do it. Make sure that you dont turn the drain plug the wrong way and make sure you dont over tighten it. It will strip very easy. make sure that the old washer on the drain plug isnt stuck on the oilpan.

Best advice?

"Do not overtighten the oil pan plug"

Have a torque wrench?

Can't tell you how many strip the plug.

If you want to do it quick, go to Wally World, get some Rotella and a Fram.
Not Lowes?

Autozone carries filters for the busa. Take your time if it is your first time taking of the fairings. If it is you first fairing removal take the right side dash peices off first and don't forget the black under cowl underneath the nose. Other than thatyour in buisness

I have been looking over the manual.

I think I will get a torque wrench. Any good excuse to buy new toys right? I think I might just run to the bike shop and get the right filter and oil. I can't have anything happening to my baby. I just would not feel right.

I am getting some stands when I have the extra funds or we have a good group buy again.

Ok went and boought the stuff to do it. I am getting ready to get started may be back on for more help. I am just going to take my time. I read the manual is there a certain amount of torque for the fairing bolts too. I could not find it in there. I do not want to break the fairing, that is my biggest fear I am going to screw it up.

no torque for fairing screws. i haven't done my own oil yet but have read about over tightening the oil pan screw.

oil change very easy. Fram 6018 oil filter, and 4 qts oil. Make sure to have a few rags available, and possibly some brake cleaner or Simple Green to clean off the oil from the exhaust after removing the oil filter.

also, when removing the fairings, just go slow and "unsnap" the upper inner fairing and slowly work the inside front of the fairing around the horn. It's not difficult, just take your time and be careful, you shouldn't have any problem.

good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Well minus a small break while eating it went well. I got it done. Not to sure if I over tightening the oil pan screw I put the torque wrench to it but I felt it almost getting loser before I got it to the right torque. I hope I did not mess it up. I filled it up and started everything seems to be good. I just need to put the fairings back on but I will do that tomorrow evening after work. Then it will be road test after that.

I know just an oil change but it seems like major to me it is a start at least.

good job. Just check it again after you ride for a bit and make sure nothing is leaking, and you should be good to go.

congrats.. DIY feels good, huh?

K & N oil filter!!!!... allows you to use a wrench (sooooo much easier). As far as getting to the filter, no need to completely remove fairing. Just take out the bottom and front screws, then go in through the bottom.

Well last night I just put the filter plug and oil in it. Today I got home went to put the fairing on it notices some oil under the bike. Not a huge puddle but decent. I whiped it down and put the fiarings on started it up and shen it got hot there was a little oil dripping around the plug. Do you think it is stripped or not tight enough. If it leaks a little will that be a killer am I in danger of the plug coming out if I try to ride it.

I went from thinking I saved myself some money and feeling good to thinking I screwed it up and wondering how much this will cost me.

It sounds like it's stripped. Try to take the drain plug out and see by yourself. If it is stripped, you can take the oil pan off and fix the thread or get a new one oil pan. I wouldn't recommend riding it if it is stripped.

It sounds like you stripped it. However at this point if it is stripped it wouldn't hurt to try and gingerly apply some torque and see if it is just loose. Don't feel bad guy this has happened at dealerships to and they normally do not want to pay for it. If you pull the plug out and see shinny metal in the threads than it is stripped.
